I think there's a place for JV on this roster.

Granted it's not at the front of the rotation and it's not for the price tag he's commanded in the past, but if he wants to come in and be a back of the rotation arm that can also mentor the younger guys while he tries to rack up Ws on a team friendly deal then yeah lets do it.

Bring back Kikuchi and trade Framber to Baltimore for Mayo, Basello, and Kjerstad…or 2/3 at a minimum.

Then you can sign Soto and trade Tucker as well and rebuild the top level of the farm system.

The Astros offer to Alex really got my attention. They're serious about keeping him in Houston. I knew they would talk the talk but looks like they're willing to walk the walk.

I think one or two more teams may offer more but the Astros offer is VERY competitive. I'm not ready to say I think he'll be back, but I'm way more confident than I've been in the past.

The buzz over the last couple years has always been that he wanted to go to Arizona and be closer to home. Not sure what changed there.

Haven't heard much more as far as free agency goes. I was told at the end of the season that Christian Walker would be the top priority- that may hinge on what Bregman does.

I expect Pressly to be moved offseason.

This feels like Crane told Dana to figure out a way to sign his buddy JV. Hope I'm wrong unless the price tag is right.

Agree with the idea but you'd get 1 of those 3 max (and that's ok).

If we sign Bregman, all the rest of the moves will be bargain moves. We don't even have the money to sign Bregman and get under the 1st tax.

2022-2023 Chas definitely. But last year Jake was better even though they both couldn't hit

Hopefully Chas goes back to his previous numbers

You would hope Bregman is smart enough to see the trajectory that Speinger and Correa took after leaving the Astros. He gives the appearance of a guy much more interested in legacy than money.

Could be so many meanings...

Close on years
Closer on money
Close on insensitive
Or simply close to agreement bc he will wait on other offers

Here is how I take it: He's made it all the way to free agency, so he might as well see what the best offers are and see if he can get something to negotiate with the Astros against. Even if he's content with the Houston offer, he's doing his due diligence.

But on the flip side, we need to put him on a timeline. We can't afford to wait around on him and miss out on something like Walker.

"The Athletic's Jim Bowden predicts Bregman resigns for 7 years, $185m."

I don't see how Bregman returns value in this kind of deal. I think to make it, you half to believe some of the following will be true:

1. You win a World Series in 2-4 years
2. You think Bregman will be a good mentor to young players in the rebuild in the back portion of the contract.
3. You think you can unload this contract in the future.

3 seems very unlikely.

2 is pretty likely.

1 is possible.

But I don't know if you can win a WS trying to find a new 3B, CF, and 1B. Bregman does seem like the best option at 3B for the Astros.

The Orioles and Astros are interesting trading partners. Both seem to have pieces for a WS, but defects in their roster. It will be interesting if both teams can make a deal that improves each of their odds.

Will be an interesting offseason.

Trade Pressly for mountcastle
I don't know where I saw this, but we should trade Pressly to the Tibetan League for a yak.
while that would be fun i think i'd prefer a serviceable first baseman, lol

Quick correction to the OP.

We chose Hidalgo over Abreu. It still turned out to be the wrong choice, but at least it was defensible at the time.

Which Houston athlete ends up having the better career after getting shot... Richard Hidalgo or Tank Dell?

changed my mind, take the yak. new stadium name means we need new traditions

some teams have a bullpen cart bring in relievers, the astros can have a yak bring them in. can you ride a yak? or will the yak need to pull a buggy?

If Bregman resigns with the Astros after Cole resigned (under different circumstances) with the Yankees, I wonder if more guys start just re-upping.

If he signs there, it means they didn't get Soto and got a lot worse. I wonder if they see Jazz as a more of a fit at 3B. It'll be cheaper and easier to find a second baseman.

The more I think about it, the more I don't think the big NY, LA markets get into the Bregman sweepstakes. He's coming back.

What if the home he bought in Arizona was just a spring training home for when he signs with Seattle?
