DallasAg 94 Guide to watching (or listening) to MLB
Spring Training: This is the time to romanticize. It is the time for back-of-the-card baseball statistics comparisons. Some average schmoos will be projected by fans as HoFers... and some established veterans may be considered washed-up.
Player's view: Time for tinkering and evaluating effectiveness for adjustments.
Fan's should collect information and contemplate, but by the end, it resets to 0 to start the season and all bets are off.
March/April: This is the time to get smacked in the face. Many fans panic and make season long decisions about the teams' deficiencies and celebrate Ws.
Player's view: "Oh ****, that didn't work." or "Ok, I like how that feels." Players get real world feed back on where they are and off-season adjustments. They'll likely continue to tinker and focus on what is working.
Fan's should get excited that baseball has returned. Fans should also realize it is a marathon. Focus on enjoying baseball's return with all the hopes and dreams of winning the WS.
May: Now is the time to let teams get their stride. You'll start to see who has promise and start to doubt where players are. Be patient. Be patient.
Player's view: I think this is where players start to get their comfort. They've made some adjustments and now you're starting to see teams a 2nd time. All the off-season surprises were revealed and now you get better scouting and consistency.
Fan's view: Now is the time to sit back and watch your favorable players get in a rhythm. Teams will start to show strengths/weaknesses.
June: Time for players to show themselves and standout on the team. Voting for the ASG is underway and you want to be noticed.
Player's view: "A couple more HRs and a nice defensive play will get me more votes." Ok, maybe they aren't that completely focused on themselves, but their stats and performance become much more relevant. Some players are starting to wonder if they are going to get dumped. Some may have already.
Fan's view: Root on your favorite players and vote. Vote. Vote. Vote.
July: All-bets are off. The ASG seems to break teams and players. 2nd H of July leaves almost every team's fans wondering, "Who TF is this team."
ASG-to-Trade deadline: This is almost as fun as Spring Training. Who will my team trade? Who will my team get? Where are the holes in the roster? Will my team address them? What teams are quitting?
That will get you to the summer. Enjoy. The pre-playoff season begins in August and that is when it is time to panic.
