I just don't understand burning Gray to bring in Pruitt in a one run game. Makes zero sense. The guys a bum and he's given up a homer every damn outing
Just like Bascik mentioned, Eovaldi was not sharp but battled thru it. Gray looked great. And you basically set it all on fire with Pruitt
Bochy is absolutely awesome in the playoffs.
He does some really stupid crap in the regular season though. I like to say that he tries things out to see what he can count on in the playoffs, but he proves that wrong several times throughout the year. Burning Gray to put in a verified bum in an April game is not playoff positioning. It's just flat stupid.

Yes, he's an interesting study. Playoff magician. .49999 regular season. Some of that is a guy that manages for that long will drift close to the regular season mean regardless, but he does pull some head scratching stuff. But I'll forever be Team Boch

I really don't understand what Pruitt is doing not only on the roster, but on the mound in close games. How much of this do we need to see before the inevitable DFA occurs?
Same here. Didn't even understand what they saw in him in the first place. We all knew he was crap before he even threw a pitch for the rangers.
We may have a late bloomer on our hands in Round Rock. Sandro Fabian has started the season on fire and has continued that tonight. He's 26 and been an average minor leaguer up until this season. In 51 ABs he's batting .393 with a 1.022 OPS.

Would much rather drop him to 8 or 9.
I have no clue why Bochy continues to bat him anywhere near the top half of the lineup.

The only good things about this weekend is that the nationals didn't get swept by the Astros and the weekend is almost over.
This team looks exhausted and they need an off day.
A road trip of 10 games with stops in Houston, Detroit, and Atlanta packed into a 17 game in a row stretch is absolutely brutal. I was just hoping for 1 win in Atlanta but it's not looking good at this point.
The Braves and Dodgers are regular season juggernauts. Teams built to win 100-110games. Would gladly take 2-4 against them every year and hope a NL team gets hot and knocks them out of the playoffs.

I think it's as simple as trying to find some innings quite honestly.

Gray threw 24 PC, so this could have been you typical bullpen session and he could still make his GS on Tues.

I'm curious though, because if this is a potential WS matchup, I could see Bochy using this as a way to have Gray come out in the middle of an Inning in a high-leverage spot. It had to have been pre-planned because you're not going to send him from the dugout to the BP in what would otherwise be an emergency situation. It wasn't an emergency. You also don't want to use Robertson in a game you are down by 1 Run.
The bigger picture is what happens when Bradford and Scherzer re-enter the rotation. We've discussed ad nauseam, but Gray was not one I really considered.
In an off-season interview with Gray, he talked about his post-season pitching. He got so amped up during the conversation and you could tell he was all-in to win the WS.
Eovaldi-Dunning-Bradford, IMO, right now are a solid 3. Assuming all stay healthy.
Lorenzen and Heaney are FAs at the end of the year. Both likely want to remain in the rotation. The question for me is, would they prefer to be traded rather than moved to the bullpen. That's a tough question. Lorenzen just settled for a 1yr deal. Heaney accepted the Rangers option for 2024 likely because he didn't want to go out to market.
If your choice was: Move to the bullpen and remain in line for the Post-Season with the Rangers and likely get $5M for 2025 in a 1yr deal... OR... get traded to a contender and remain in the rotation and open up a potential $12-15M/yr deal for 1..2.. maybe 3 years. $5M? Or $15-20M+?!
Gray is contracted in 2025. For him, moving to the BP is less significant. If he wants to stay in the rotation, he may get traded which not only impacts 2024... but 2025. Where as, if he moves to the BP, he almost assuredly won't get traded.
The playoff rotation pecking order seemingly would be: Eovaldi-Scherzer-deGrom, then a scramble for the 4th spot (if/when necessary).
Having said that... Gray is at 3.15 ERA.
Maybe this was just a one-off opportunity where Gray saw he could expand his relevance and role.
No one has EVER accused me of overthinking things.

I mean simply get some innings from guys not named Robertson, Yates or Urena. You could even add LeClerc; but those guys have pitched a lot of high stress situations already to start the year. They are also in their mid 30's. You don't want to run them into the ground.
