One other oddity, why do we have two guys getting scratched the day of their start in April and going on the IL? Are they really getting hurt the day of or is our staff incapable of identifying what is and is not serious so we can't plan roster changes?

Why tell the other team who to scout for? It's not like more bullpen arms would have helped before today.

Nah. Plenty of teams succeed with new managers. We made the ALCS with a new manager just four years ago.

For the record, I still think we're going to turn it around this year. So this is much more of a hypothesis that I hope is wrong than an official take.

But it's hard to remove the institutional/strategic knowledge of Maldy/Molina and not miss a beat. They're two of the best of this era in that regard.

Obviously Maldy is a trigger word around here and I'm not saying we didn't make the right decision to move on. We were going to have to move on eventually and the evidence that he should no longer play on any regular basis is stockpiled high.

But there's a reason why we wanted him back in a "not-player" capacity and will likely to continue to pursue him as such until Maldy finally concedes that he's no longer a major league catcher. His ability to diagnose opponent strategies/tendencies and counter when live bullets are flying has an impact not just on the pitching staff but other facets of the game as well. It's a big loss relative to last year, especially when combined with the fact that our nerd staff has been depleted in recent years.

No bet. Abreu is at .223. So that would mean Bregman and Chas would have to average .890 each on the season. Not a chance.
