Good thing the Astros do a decent job developing homegrown pitching talent.
Agreed. Keep the Latin Pipeline/drafting/developing going

This is a very good piece by @CodyStavenhagen detailing how the gap between Triple-A and the majors has widened and the reasons behind it.

In general, the quality of play throughout the minors has fallen DRASTICALLY in recent years. https://t.co/AIaZJnMJbw
The Astros are averaging 5.5 runs per game in Kyle Tucker's absence. Six other qualified hitters have an OPS+ of at least 100. Alex Bregman's is 99. Houston scored six runs in five innings last night during a game that accentuated their most apparent need -https://t.co/KMi9xMZxIw

Our (wife &I) first time in May.
Cruised from Vancouver to Seward (Silversea, only 640 passengers). Then couple days and nights in Anchorage and 2 nights 3 days in Denali.
Amazing part of the world
Jealous of y'all.

I love how it's just a causal mention that the guy stuck at leadoff, 2, or cleanup depending on health and rest days is OPS+ing 99.

Oof. Makes you want to avoid any long term pitcher contracts. Especially with the jump in pitcher injuries the last couple of years.

wRC+ of 132 since May 9th.
Also so many guys are staying in college and making either the direct jump to the bigs or AA for a brief stint and then jumping to the show. I bet that factors into it as well.Ag_07 said:EastCoastAgNc said:This is a very good piece by @CodyStavenhagen detailing how the gap between Triple-A and the majors has widened and the reasons behind it.

Well yeah no shlt...Didn't they take 1.5 years completely off due to COVID?
That'll do it for sure.
People are upset at Luis Robert here for his “effort.” He had 4 RBIs tonight, over 66% of our total runs.
— Just Another Year: White Sox (@JAYCWhiteSox) July 3, 2024
We are 24-63. He feels hopeless because the White Sox are hopeless.
Be mad at Jerry or Getz or Grifol. This play is a product of their incompetence.pic.twitter.com/5CwkbCwLxn

No offense, but I'm going to have to take a bit deeper dive than that. Some of the newer stats seem really really obscure.rosco511 said:
These "newer" stats actually have more correlation to judging whether someone is good/successful, which is why they are used.
The older stats were created and used because people thought they were good indicators of how to judge and rate players. This is why I always laugh when the "old school" people say they do not like all this statistical stuff as baseball has always been about using stats to try to differentiate performance. The new stats are just better measures and correlation of performance.
If you're a professional in any field, there's no good reason not to give it your all. what if the runner trips and falls breaking from third?EastCoastAgNc said:People are upset at Luis Robert here for his “effort.” He had 4 RBIs tonight, over 66% of our total runs.

Apparently Luis Robert didn't even bother throwing home on the game winning sac fly last night. Not doing himself any favors in terms of getting off that team
We did that trip in reverse the spring before Covid. We are not campers, but that was a great tripRC_57 said:Have you been to AK before?Mathguy64 said:

Feels like Joey or Singleton could PH in Kessinger's spot once Kikuchi is out.Yusei Kikuchi throws with his left hand. He has held left-handed hitters to a .212/.271/.373 slash line during his major-league career. Right-handed hitters are hitting .275 with a career .826 OPS against him. https://t.co/BS8ztU7bod

I don't think any of them are meaningless, I just think baseball is a game that really is a lot more about feel and momentum more than "we gotta lift this guy before he goes through the lineup a third time because off statistics" when the guy is buzz bombing hitters left and right.texasaggie2015 said:
They wouldn't use them if they were meaningless. They paint a much better picture of who a player is.

Cal Quantrill feels like he fits into what the Astros would be looking for:
— Ari Alexander (@AriA1exander) July 3, 2024
- He's under contract for 2024 and 2025 (Arb 4 in '25)
- He threw 186 innings in 2022, so no worries about overtaxing
- He won't be overly expensive, and is gettable https://t.co/1t9fTdzgCE
Justin Verlander is now playing catch every other day.

To quote Bob Costas, "This game has a heartbeat. It's not being played on a computer, but by human beings."
I'll leave it there until the off-season. I don't want to start the Greens vs the Blacks over here
Playing catch every other day and being a motorboatin' SOB every other day and getting paid 118 grand per day to do that.EastCoastAgNc said:Justin Verlander is now playing catch every other day.

Jose Altuve was elected the American League's starting second baseman in the All-Star Game. It is his ninth All-Star selection: the most in Astros history.
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) July 3, 2024
Jose Altuve did not attend the All-Star Game in 2021 or 2022 while dealing with various injuries. Asked earlier today if he will attend this year's game at Globe Life Field, here is what he said pic.twitter.com/HyHiShFAeU
