Looks like Cole Winn gets the start today at 2:05.

I think it was Sandler on The Fan this weekend who responded when asked what Cole Winn has to do... He said Cole has to prove to himself that he can pitch at the MLB level. Sounded like the old "mental" aspect. They indicated you'd know if he got ahead of hitters early, it was a good sign regardless of results.

Winn walked the leadoff batter; next batter has a single... So I am going with not a good sign so far, but I don't have time to keep watching the game updates right now.

wild pitch puts runners on 2nd and 3rd, then a HBP to load them up. Yikes

That's good stuff.

Winning cures all and a World Series Championship ensures everyone looks past a lot of things.

Maintaining it is incredibly hard especially when slumps come around.

Like a good marriage (back to the dating theme), you've gotta invest heavily when the times are good so that you can draw on them when trouble lurks.

I think Semien is probably far and away a bigger leader than it seems. He was signed. The Rangers then went and got Seager. Semien took the attitude that this is going to be a long-term relationship, the team is better with both of them, and it was time to get to work.

He sets a tone of out-working everyone else and if you want to beat him out, you're going to have to earn it.

He was able to get out of it with only 1 R scored.

After a 4 PC walk, he through 5 of the next 7 for Strikes. 1 was your WP the other the HBP.

Let's assume it was jitters. Hopefully he comes back out for the 2nd and grinds.

Not the start I was hoping for, but maybe not all is lost.

One more comment...

I've said this... I grew up watching the '70s Dodgers. It was Ron Cey - Bill Russell - Davey Lopes - Steve Garvey, and Steve Yeager behind the plate. Every game. Every day. Every year.

Cey: '71-82 (12 yrs)
Russell: '69-86 (18 yrs)
Lopes: '72-81 (10 yrs)
Garvey: '69-82 (14 yrs)
Yeager: '72-85 (14 yrs)

That allows you to build a pipeline:
NL ROY:
'79 Sutcliffe (LAD)
'80 Howe (LAD)
'81 Valenzuela (LAD)
'82 Steve Sax (LAD) <- at 22 took over for Lopes at 2B

Those 3 SPs all pitched in front of a very talented and seasoned infield.

We have the ability to have the same IF for the next 3 (Lowe/Heim) to 5 years (Seager/Semien/Jung)

Winn looks to have recovered. If the Pitches are correct, he hammered the zone after starting with a 4PC BB.

ETA, he went 1.2. He didn't pitch in the 3rd per the comment above.

1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO

If he is healthy, I'm going to call that a Winn (pun intended).

just checked the Game info, couple of notables:
-Braden Shewmake (Texas A&M baseball) is now with the CWS, he had been in the Braves organization.
-former Ranger farmhand Alex Speas is also now with the CWS.

both are in the game today for the CWS.

Excited to see what Church can bring to this bullpen this year. Another good outing from him. Also, Crim may play his way into the DH/ backup 1B role. He's off to a good start this spring.

Crim is super deserving of a shot!

Tomorrow will be G5 in ST.

Dunning goes tomorrow on short-rest. That was the plan in his 1.0 IP GS on the 23rd.

Heim has yet to catch and Garcia has only played in the B game. All planned rest.

Lots of notably guys so far, but let's see how that progresses.

In terms of SP:
A late addition that caught me surprised... Adrian Sampson. He has 2.0 IP and he could be the best push for #5.

Also Jose Urena (age 32) looks interesting.

Winn (1.2 IP), Leiter (1.0), White (1.0)
Duffy (1.0 IP) <- More likely RP, IMO.
Bradford (2.0 IP)

Taking inventory of our Starting Pitching options for 2024.
I think we'll start seeing more separation next week, so all of this is just to familiarize with what we're working with.

24 P on the 40. 13/14 NRI Ps
13 Max on Active 26

SP (4 of 5 set):
LH: Heaney (32)
RH: Eovaldi (33), Dunning (28), Gray (31)

Hopeful SP (1 of 5):
LH: Bradford (25)
RH: Winn (23), Zak Kent (25), White (23)

NRI:
LH: -
RH: Leiter (23-SP), Urena (32-SP-MLB), Adrian Sampson (32-SP-MLB)

IL (3): Mahle (29), Scherzer (39), deGrom (35)

Some of my opinions. Bradford is the only real option for #5. Urena and Sampson have MLB experience, but if you're going to invest in a player, Bradford is a better option. Urena and Sampson could find themselves as insurance options sent to AAA that could be called upon as fill-ins. Sampson was previously with the Rangers, so he may have a self-interest to stick with the Rangers.

Winn, Kent, White, and Leiter will likely be at AAA and a stack-ranking of them will sort itself out during ST. Any call-up necessary in the 1st month will go to Urena or Sampson. After than, I'd expect a cycle through WKWL. Leiter is not on the 40, but moving any of the IL guys to the 60 will open up a spot keeping him as an option.

I agree with most of this, but I think you're incorrect as to who the 1st call up would be. Owen White is on the 40, I think he would get the 1st shot before you start trying to open up a slot for one of the other guys. IMO Urena & Sampson are arms you turn to if White or Bradford flame out. It's a pretty tight 40 man roster, I think they'll try to keep the status quo for as long as possibe.

40 will also be less complicated once those 3 IL pitchers move to the 60. Probably the rule 5 guy too.
DallasAg 94
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Just a procedural point... I think if you move a player to the 60IL it requires a corresponding move. Meaning, you only use the 60 in order to get a roster spot open. You wouldn't just move them to the 60 unless you had someone you needed on the 40.

But, yes... those 3 options give flexibility to the roster and I'd expect IF we needed to add Leiter, Sampson, Urena, other... that is the path.

Meh. Don't need Bombi to be cursed this season.

And the Rule V guy is Coleman.

https://www.si.com/mlb/rangers/news/texas-rangers-select-carson-coleman-rule-5-draft-new-york-yankees

He'll be interesting. April TJ. So, my guess is, you are right, he may land on the 60, but not sure how Rule V guys work there. Regardless, he'll have to make the Active Roster at some point unless we strike a trade. Much will depend on his rehab, I suppose.

With 26 players, I think it is easier to stash a player

Looked it up... they have to spend 90 days on the active roster or the rule 5 criteria carry over to the next year for the number of days not on the roster. So if they keep Coleman on the 60 day until Aug 1, then activate him for Aug/Sept, he'd have to be on for roughly 30 days next April to drop the requirement.

If any of you subscribe to Bob Sturm's Substack, he wrote about the rotation today. Pretty similar to what we've been saying. He said, CY made the point that this rotation is what we had in the middle of the year last year and they held their own. Here's what Bob added:

Quote:

From May 1 until the trades for Scherzer and Montgomery on the final days of July, the Rangers had to play roughly from Game 28 until Game 107 of the season. 79 games and pretty much half of the season if we stretch it out until Montgomery and Scherzer actually pitch on Aug. 3.

During that stretch, they went from 17-11 to 62-46 for a record of 45-35 without DeGrom, Montgomery, and Scherzer at all. Heck, they even had to do without Eovaldi by mid July. They were literally running on fumes, but it still was working.

That is a very valid point.. but I could clearly envision the bat spike against HOU on the cover

Group Ticket Options:

I'm looking to plan several group events for customers and was curious what others have done (5-10 people per event). I don't necessarily want to get tickets where everyone is sitting in rows and can't talk to each other.
The first thing that comes to mind is a suite, but it looks like they are all sold out? Any other ideas/options I'm not aware of?

Watching the GameCast, since I don't get an audio or video broadcast.

Dunning went 2.0/40 PC.

Leiter went 2.0/31 PC. 23strikes and 8 pitches called balls. Some of the strikes were balls that were swung at.

Here is what I could draw from the pitches.

#1... I think Leiter throws almost all of his pitches for strikes and likely has good command.
#2... His 4 Seam FB... that is a different story.

5 of his 8 called balls were 4-Seam FBs that well above the zone and IIRC, all over 96 mph. Several 96+ 4SFB were swung at.

When his 4SFB was below 95 mph, it was mostly in the zone. Also, in his 2nd IP, the 4SFB he threw over 96 mph were landing in the zone.

He got beat around in his 1st IP and seemed more settled in his 2nd IP.

It could be a success story that he doesn't throw his 4SFB the 1st time through the order and then only as an out pitch. From the pitch reports I might think at times he is a little more geared up to throw when he gets the 4SFB call and it is sailing on him.

All his other pitches seemed to be reporting as successes.

Edit to add: at least he didn't walk anyone, I guess?

I listened to the game. He started slow and finished strong.

He's thrown maybe 2 or 3 innings, it's ridiculous to make that sort of comment this early in ST. Give it a few weeks.

It's not a few weeks though. It's been two years of this, so I'm skeptical.

He's thrown 3 innings, given up 1 earned run and not walking people. What are we upset about here?
