Rangers are in such weird spot. IF (big IF) everyone comes back healthy they have plenty of depth in the 2H. They are razor thin for 3-4 months. You will need someone in that stretch. Right now it's Duffy? I want that next man up to be Bradford, but I get what game they are playing.

I hope they know something I don't about Winn/White/Leiter, but I'm very skeptical.
IMO, Duffy isn't getting you more than 70-75 IP in '24. He just hasn't pitched enough in the past 4 years and is aging. I'd say pair him with Bradford, however both are Lefty.

I think Bradford gets the 5th spot, unless Leiter or Winn are phenomenal. I just don't see the benefit.

Duffy will likely be in the BP. I do think he'll make the club and they likely move deGrom to the 60 to make a spot.

I agree about Winn/White/Leiter. It is likely mental at this point. For Winn, he has had some stumbles/health nags the past couple years. He had a great PRWL stint, so we'll see if he is past that.

Spring Training... all pitchers are going to have a breakout Cy Young year. Until they don't.

I'm okay with them not having traded any of the field position players quite yet because I think they wanted to give a number of them a chance to be a DH and be a cheap one at that. Having said that, this is the year they need to start shipping guys off. Most of them are AAAA players who probably won't help us much, so ship them off for one of two guys who can.

Without signing Semien, Foscue is our starting 2B and we'd have likely been ok with it.

Duran our 2B (if not for Seager) and Smith our Utility guy.

Carter got pulled in the bottom of the 1st after a HBP.

Probably precautionary but something to keep an eye on.

NYM lose projected Opening Day Starter Senga. Throwing shoulder. Shut down indefinitely.

Hate to see it. I don't see the Mets signing Snell or Monty, but they are likely going to need to find outside help.

Megill is their best internal option, IMO. His numbers seem about like a dip worse than Bradford. If Megill were entering as your #5... fine... but he is needing to replace their #1.

Evan Grant on a potential Bellinger like short term contract for Montgomery:

I almost feel like Boras is bad for baseball. I understand the logic behind getting the players the most bang for the buck and getting them paid their worth but this is exhausting

I agree, Boras sucks. Pretty sure all of the big name holdouts are his clients. He pushes for what he thinks they are worth, plus a little more. Then if he doesn't get it, they miss part of camp (for whatever team they sign with) and the team suffers.

But in this case, I wouldn't mind signing Montgomery for a shorter term deal, if it were to work out. It's always the back end of these contracts that aren't good. Montgomery was awesome last year following the trade and into the post-season... but can he maintain that for the 5+ years that he and Boras seek? I have more confidence that he can for the first year or two than in year four or five. So sure, lets do a shorter term deal and milk as many "good" years as can. Not sure if CY and Ray Davis agree, but lets see how it plays out.

It's pretty complicated in regards to the Montgomery situation. On the Rangers' side of things, you've got the CBT (that we're already over) and they're negotiating with a 31-yr old pitcher, represented by Scott Boras, who is realistically getting his last bite at the free agency apple - at least for a big contract.

I wouldn't sign him to a long term deal either, but the player and his agent realize that this is likely the last big contract he's going to sign, so on their side of things they're wanting to maximize his value while they can.

IMO he winds up elsewhere, probably the Red Sox (and not because of his wife, she's already committed to a residency in Nashville fairly soon). Hopefully I'm wrong, but I'm really not optimistic that a deal can get done with the Rangers. Too many forces working against. JMO

Boras is absolutely bad for baseball. He's one of the main reasons that contracts have gotten so incredibly out of hand in baseball over the past decade+. I am really quite happy that GMs and owners have put their foot down on some of these contracts and players.

I'll continue to say it; pay guys their worth or slightly more when they are young and in their prime, not when they are 32. Baseball is the only sport that has handed out outrageous contracts for solid (not superstar) players past their age 30 seasons. The NFL hands out contracts like this to QBs, but that's the only position. The NBA, while also wild in terms of money, doesn't usually pay huge contracts for guys in their 30's outside of superstars. I won't even touch on soccer, because that's a whole other can of worms.

I like Jordan Montgomery and want him on the Rangers going into this season, but is he actually worth giving anything more than four years to when he's entering his age 31 season? No, because like it or not, he's not a superstar level pitcher. Jordan Montgomery is a good MLB pitcher who can have great stretches like what we saw, but he's never going to win a Cy Young or be regarded as one of the absolute best pitchers in the league, and paying him 25+ for more than four years is saying he's one of the best pitchers in baseball.

Hey Josh -

Any offer code for the game against USC this weekend??
DallasAg 94

This is on Monty, IMO. Reports are they are looking to better the Aaron Nola deal of 7yrs/$172M ($24.6M).

If Monty wants $25M, I believe those offers are available. Probably a 4 yr deal for $100M could be had.

Now, we'll be talking about a pillow deal for $27M/3yr with 1 year opt-outs. All risk put on the teams.

If he was really asking 7yr... even if that was Boras, Monty is the boss and has gone with it. Makes me much less interested in Monty if they are looking at 7 yrs. Mainly because they've floated the idea of wanting to be with the Rangers.

I have little patience in the "dating" arena. If I ask you to dance either you do or you don't. Don't make me buy you a drink while you think about it. Plenty of options.

I look at Boras as the alternative to owners.

If the Cubs are willing to give a favorable deal to Bellinger that allows him to win even if the team loses, that is on the Owners.

Boras is playing the game the Owners have dealt. He is just better at their game than they are.

Cody Bellinger is a little more of a unique situation too. Was he also looking for a 5-7 year contract, absolutely, but he had some really lean seasons prior to last years resurgence with Cubs. He's also 28 and not 30+, and going to be paid 30m this year and next, and 20m in 2026. That's a huge chunk of change, and imo will be hard to pass up even if he has a season as good as last years. Is it favorable to Bellinger, absolutely, but they are also paying for a younger guy (relative) who has some sizable upside for only 3 seasons. The term alone is a win for the Cubs.

Unless you are a season ticket holder, I don't foresee any ticket opportunities for all star week right now. Might be best to check secondary market

No. Fantastic wife that took me years to train. I don't have to buy her a drink in order to dance.

But, back in the day, "You want to dance? No? How about your friend?" I've got some great stories.

My wife found out I only would dance with her when I was chasing after her. Now that we've been together for 8 years she has to twist my arm to get me to go dancing lol

Looks like Cole Winn gets the start today at 2:05.

I think it was Sandler on The Fan this weekend who responded when asked what Cole Winn has to do... He said Cole has to prove to himself that he can pitch at the MLB level. Sounded like the old "mental" aspect. They indicated you'd know if he got ahead of hitters early, it was a good sign regardless of results.

Lineup:
Travis Jankowski (L) CF
Jared Walsh (L) 1B
Ezequiel Duran (R) SS
Sam Huff (R) C
Dustin Harris (L) LF
Justin Foscue (R) 2B
Derek Hill (R) RF
Blaine Crim (R) DH
Jonathan Ornelas (R) 3B

Harris - Jankowski - Hill
Ornelas - Duran - Foscue - Walsh
