Evan Grant on foul territory. Have not listened yet

Eta: he talks about Monty early. He doesn't think the Rangers sign him.
Eta2: he thinks the club is planning Langford to break camp with the big club

I don't think Langford is going to make the opening day roster. Let him get a few hundred more at bats at AAA then move him on up.

This would be disappointing, considering we have a DH spot open as well. I seem to remember having this same convo about bringing Carter up late last year for the playoff push in September. Langford is as ready as any prospect we've had in years. If he doesn't make the team then something went wrong.

Is the jousting between AJP and Evan Grant good natured or was there something between them when he was with the Rangers?

That was a good listen.

Huge year for Porter. This is his year to really take the next step and start jumping up the rankings. Same could be said for Leiter as well, but I don't think anyone has a clue there. Porter at least has growth and projection left.

Hoping Cole Winn is back in the prospect path. He pitched in Winter League.

Winn (23-PRWL): 6GS, 7G, 2.63, 24.0 IP, 24 SO, 1.083 WHIP, 10BB

If you are wondering why Robertson got more than Neris, it's because almost half of the $11.5 million that was reported for Robertson is deferred. I had missed that previously, but here is an article.

Oh how the mighty fall...

In the summer of '21, the Rangers offered Gallo 5yr/$84M, or $16.8M per.

He and Boras turned them down and Gallo was traded to the NYY. 2022 was an Arb year for Gallo.

He has averaged $8.7M. The book is still out on him. He could find himself making $30M per year for '25 and '26. But it isn't looking good for him and Boras.

Gallo:
'22 - $10.275M - Yankees: 126G, .160, 19 HR, 163 SO, .280 OBP
'23 - $11.000M - M Twins: 111G, .177, 21 HR, 142 SO.301 OBP
'23 - $ 5.000M - Nats.

That will be $26M over 3 years where

https://www.yardbarker.com/mlb/articles/joey_gallo_wanted_300m_from_rangers/s1_13237_35517812

Quote:

Grant reports that the Rangers offered Gallo a five-year, $84 million extension that could have become worth more than $100 million if the outfielder hit various incentive clauses and escalators within the deal.

Gallo has one year of arbitration eligibility remaining, so this proposed extension would have covered the 2022 season and then four free agent years, keeping the veteran in the fold through his age-32 season.

I saw that.

From the way COTS has it lined up (and that may change) from a CBT amount it doesn't really help much. It would be more of a cash-flow thing. ETA: That might be an indication of the actual budget constraint.

$10.0M attributed to payroll in '24
$11.5M hit to CBT
Reality is $5M in '24 plus 5 $1M payments annually in '27.

His $1.5M buyout appears to be attributed to 2024.

ETA: Robertson is also considered a clubhouse guy, from what I could tell. I don't know anything about Neris other than to say maybe this was more of an issue:

Maybe he has some issues. Presumably, the Astros didn't sign him and they would know the most, I'd think.

I'm pleased with the Robertson signing. I've always thought he was a solid, low drama relief pitcher. After last season, I think we all appreciate low drama relievers.

I liked Neris as well. Seems like the guy is a workhorse. Getting both Robertson and Neris would have set us up nicely. We're going to need a strong bullpen for the first 4 months until all of our spaghetti arm starting pitchers get off the DL.

I'm starting to think the Rangers not having signed Monty could be about contract length.

All the talk on the Rangers' desire to develop internal SP could indicate the Rangers are fixed on 3yr. I'd suspect Boras is looking for 5yrs with an option for a 6th. Is Boras holding Snell and Monty hostage for 6yr deals?

We all know, Bradford is currently our #5 to start 2024, with Scherzer, deGrom, and Mahle joining mid-season. So, really 8 SPs we'll have access to in 2024.

Below are the 2023 ranking and 2023 eta to reach MLB. I'll update once MLB releases the 2024 Top30.
'24 (5+3): Heaney, Eovaldi, Gray, Dunning, Bradford
'25 (6): Eovaldi, Gray, Dunning, Bradford, Mahle, deGrom
'26 (3): Dunning, Bradford, deGrom

2024 Loses after season
Scherzer: $12.8M ('24); FA ('25)
AnHeaney: $13.0M ('24); FA ('25)

Eovaldi : $17.0M ('24); vOpt ('25); FA ('26)

2025 Loses after season
Ty Mahle: $ 5.5M ('24): $16.5 ('25); FA ('26)
Jon Gray: $13.0M ('24); $13.0M ('25); FA ('26)

2026 Availability
Dunning : $ 3.3M ('24); Arb2 ('25); Arb3 ('26)
J deGrom: $40.0M ('24); $40.0M ('25); $38.0M; $37.0M ('27); opt
Bradford: Serf
-----------

Below are the replacement options:
White (24-MLB) #8
Leiter (23-AAA-2024) #5
Rocker (24-A+-2025) #9
Stephan (22-AA-2025) #15
Porter (20-A-2026) #4
Curry (21-A+-2026) #16
-----------
Winn (24-MLB)#28
Teodo (22-A+-2025) #22
Bratt (20-A+-2025) #17
Corniell (20-MLB-2026) #23

We have 3 SPs on the 40. If Bradford can establish himself as a SP in 2024, he'll be 5+ years in the rotation or a trade option.

We have 5 more SPs that should reach MLB by 2025. All of that drafting will hopefully transition to developed young, controllable SPs.

I remember this play from Neris, but I think he actually may not be a terrible fielder despite this example.

Maybe it's because I'm not a kid anymore but, I can't see paying that for an exhibition.

At some point, I'm probably going to have to lineup (pardon the pun) what they got and what they gave during the off-season to determine if they are net-positive.

Like Preller in SDP, Seattle is overhauling their roster.

Four weeks ago, they sent Robbie Ray (SP) to SFG for Haniger (RF) and DeSclafini (SP). Ray I believe is returning from TJ. Then they flip DeSlafini for Polanco.

Seattle was flush with SP, so using SP as a surplus trade chip to bolster their Offense isn't surprising other than the fact they let most of their OF go.

I know they intended to overhaul the SO% problem, so maybe that's just more of it.
