I wonder what the insurance on something like that looks. I'm sure with his injury history that the premium is enormous but it must he worth it. What if he never pitches again, will the insurance cover half his salary? I would doubt it but who the heck knows.

Ohtani's deal includes what one source described as "unprecedented deferrals," including the majority of his salary, a source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand. That was the 2-way superstar's idea, as he wanted to mitigate the competitive balance tax and cash flow burdens to allow his new club to be as competitive as possible.

He'll turn 30 in July. In 6 MLB seasons in his youthful prime, he's averaged 116 games played per season, which has included an average of 14 starts on the mound. And we already know that it will be 0 starts next season. SMH.

$70M per for Ohtani and apparently it is heavily back-loaded to save CBT.

Having said that...for those that like math...

$32M per for Seager (10 yr/$325M)
$25M per for Semien (7 yr/$175M)

============================
$57M per combined.

$17M per for Eovaldi (2 yr/$34M (23-24)+25 v p opt)
============================
$74M for Seager, Semien, and Eovaldi.

Consider the lost Comp pick for signing Ohtani who had a QO...
DallasAg 94

More math.

I'm not sure the terms of the contract and I'm not sure how California handles deferred-income...

But, according to this site:

Federal Income Tax: $25.86M (36.94 effective tax rate)
California Income Tax: $9.28M (13.26 effective tax rate)
Total Income Tax: $35.14M <- TAXES
Net Income: $34.86M

Now, there is some differentials based on where he plays his games. He'll play in SD, SF, and LA. With LAAA, he played in Oak, and LAAA Plus interleague games in Cal.

Then, when you look at housing and cost-of-living, and $70M doesn't go as far in California as it would have in Texas.

Wonder on average how many tickets that would make up per game?

Well now that's an interesting take.

So if the Dodgers raise ticket prices on average $10 across the board and they average 40,000 fans a game…

Edit: that covers half the games. Whoops.

Despite being on record many times as wanting Ohtani for the Rangers, 70 million per season is too much for one player for us. I think technically he's worth it for the Dodgers as long as he plays, but it is harder to build a team with a number like that on the books for a team like the Rangers.

Now on to hoping that Bellinger might be a target. He'd be that 1st base/outfield/DH upgrade we're looking for.

It's the MLB. There's no salary cap. He's "worth it" as long as the owner is willing to spend on all aspects of the team.

Bellinger is out of our price range. That kind of money would likely be spent on pitching if we did decide to spend.

As of now with a $70M AAV assigned for 2024, they are at CBT $246.7 for 2024. $9M over.

As repeat offenders, the LAD are likely to see 110% Tax

Quote:

The following thresholds were put in place per the 2022-26 collective bargaining agreement:

2024: $237 million
2025: $241 million
2026: $244 million

Quote:

A club that exceeds the Competitive Balance Tax threshold is subject to an increasing tax rate depending on how many consecutive years it has done so.

First year: 20 percent tax on all overages
Second consecutive year: 30 percent
Third consecutive year or more: 50 percent

There's also a surcharge threshold for clubs that exceed the base threshold by $20 million or more.
$20 million to $40 million: 12 percent surcharge
$40 million to $60 million: 42.5 percent surcharge for first year; 45 percent for each consecutive year after that
$60 million or more: 60 percent surcharge

Clubs that are $40 million or more above the threshold shall have their highest selection in the next Rule 4 Draft moved back 10 places unless the pick falls in the top six. In that case, the team will have its second-highest selection moved back 10 places instead.
They have $11M gap before hitting the surcharge. At which point, they'll pay an additional 12% and up.

Say, they sign Monty for $30M. It will cost them $15M (50% for 3rd yr) and $1.2M (12% for $20-40M over) extra. So, a $30M AAV for Monty will cash-flow $46.2M.

They need at least 3 SP.

Is the assumption that LA will be taxed 110% based on the assumption that they will get 3 more pitchers putting them 60 million over the tax?

Yes.

Now that Ohtani is settled.

Here is where I see the AL right now:

NYY (E)
Texas (W)
Baltimore (E)
Houston (W)
Seattle (W)
Tampa (E)
Toronto (E)
Twins (C)
Boston (E)
Cleveland (C)
Detroit (C)
CWS (C)
KC (C)
LAAA (W)
Oakland (W)

NYY adding Soto is the biggest jump.

Texas, Baltimore, and Houston have some parity. Texas holds the advantage because they got the WS Trophy.

Seattle could be dropped. Great pitching, but lost LF, RF, and 3B.
Tampa could be dropped.

The ALCentral has parity of mediocrity.

LAAA and Oak will be horribly bad... except when they play the Rangers.

These are my speculations, no inside info nor drawn from another:

  • I think the Yankees will finalize the Soto trade.
  • Dodgers will likely complete Ohtani by weeks end.

SFG will respond with a quick Bellinger announcement.

Tor will grab Yamamoto
Snell will go to SFG or LAD
Rangers will sign Garver
Montgomery goes to Red Sox

After all that by Monday 12/11, there will be a breather and then onesy-twosy signings will happen over the next couple weeks.
Bellinger is up.

Toronto needs to save face.

Is this based on anything other than his wife being a medical intern at Harvard? She will only be there a year and then it will be off to Nashville for 3 years to complete her residency. Unless her intern year is a LOT easier than mine was then she isn't going to have much time to spend with Monty anyways.

St. Louis, Atlanta, and the Rangers are the closest MLB teams to Nashville but none are particularly close.

Edit to add - just realized that she's in the middle of her year in Boston and she will be in Nashville July 1st.

Are the Red Sox's conceding 24 or do they have something up their sleeve? Yankees made a big move and looking to add Yamamoto. Figured the Red Sox's would be in on some of these big free agents.

Its really based on a number of things.

Need., Opportunity to win, performance, and gut. Who is in the market and can afford a $25-30M SP. Admittedly, Boston is a stretch.

St Louis was my early thought, but they signed 3 SPs, already. Atlanta is playing some game of tetris.

I don't see Montgomery fitting a team like SDP, LAD, NYM, NYM, or Wash.

As someone who dreamed of being an Orthopedic since I was 13, I know the rigors of Internship and Residency is pretty demanding. He moved up to Boston to be with his wife, and I'd be naive to think he didn't become enamored while there. I mean... he's going to have plenty of free time, right?!

Well the capacity of Dodger Stadium is 56,000 seats. If they sold out every time he plays (and assuming away) that would be every ticket sold allocates $7.72 toward his salary!! Mind boggling

We'll get to see him impact for 2024.

They averaged 47,371 in 2023.
Their CBTax Payroll was $267,240,162 (4th)
They went 100-62 (3rd) Overall in MLB.
They got swept in the playoffs 0-3 by a WC team that barely made the playoffs.

Their 2023 attendance was 3,837,079. Or about $18/game towards Ohtani's contract.

They went BIG with a Hitter, even though they don't have SP.
Their CBTax Payroll is $246,721,667, as of now.

Crazy! You're better at number crunching than I am, do you think LAD will profit off him with increased ticket, jersey, concession etc. sales in addition to his valued production?
