I also think Montgomery would be a great pick up as well. And probably cheaper if Snell is too high
With all that said, I feel like if there was/is a time in this dynasty run to shell out that kind of money, it's 2024-25. Especially if you can add a guy that materially changes the complexion of our pitching staff. Not just his ability to be a potential game 1-2 starter, but other guys the rotation get slotted down and turn France/Urquidy into top-end bullpen middle innings eaters/depth guys.Farmer1906 said:
Snell turned down 6/150, reportedly. Assume he is willing to accept the Rodon deal - 6/162.
That moves CBT payroll from 255 to 282. If I am doing the math right it would increase our tax bill from 3.6 M to 13.625 M. Its more like we'd be paying Snell 37 M this year instead of 27 M. I would think, Crane would want to offload salary at that point. Who makes sense to offload?
JV - 40.5 M (but only 17 M) - not happening. We need him.
Aluve - 23.3 M - LOL
Bregman - 20 M - not this late and without Chapman to replace him.
Abreu - 19.5 M - I wish but this contract is a boat anchor.
Alvarez - 19.1 M - LOL
Hader - 19 M - just signed
LMJ - 17 M - damaged goods will have no takers
Pressly - 15 M - i guess this is technically a possibility, but we can't take any hits to this bullpen.
Javier - 12.8 M - We'd be selling low. We have him 4 more years.
Montero - 11.5 M - Same as Abreu
Graveman - 8 M - IL
Caratini - 6 M - we need him
Valdez - 12.1 M - Would fetch a Cease like haul. But interested parties would be NY and Arlington. No thanks.
Tucker - 12 M - Would fetch an incredible haul. But we need him.
Everyone else makes less than 4 M.
No one to offload. If Crane wants Snell he's going to have to stomach a payroll we'd never been anywhere close to before.

Agreed. They won last year. They get all the credit. We get little.
But this year doesn't care who won what last year. My thinking is a decline is likely unless these young whipper snappers go nuts and pitching holds.
You're not wrong...but we're not some little plane buzzing around...we're an AC-130 aiming right down the barrel at themThe Porkchop Express said:Feels like no fan base that just won a World Series is going to GAF about what a computer says. Their fans are on top of the world and rightfully so. Regardless of what happens this year. But for now they are the King Kong, and until we prove otherwise, we're just one of the airplanes trying to shoot them down from atop the Empire State Building.Farmer1906 said:
Fangraphs thinks we have a better chance of winning the WS than the Rangers do of winning the AL West. Is that true? I have no idea, but do their fans realize where they stand? Or is any doubt just haters? The Astros have a 63% chance to win the AL West in 2024, according to FanGraphs.

Mariners 23.2%, Rangers 10.1%, Angels 3.4% and the A’s 0.3%
In regard to winning the World Series, Astros have a 11.6% chance, which is best in the AL and third best in MLB

The Astros remain engaged in the free-agent starting pitching market, multiple sources tell @TheAthletic. Owner Jim Crane coveted Blake Snell at last August's trade deadline. It's worth wondering if they may circle back - https://t.co/6kaUiYbv31

◼️ McCormick continues his torrid spring
◼️ Peña's swing has been a "a little up and down."
◼️ Dylan Coleman to start season in Triple-Ahttps://t.co/diJwnepfJO
Justin Verlander said he's feeling "really good" and got up to "92ish, maybe 93" mph in his bullpen session yesterday. Verlander left it up to the Astros' training staff as to whether he'll face hitters his next time out, but said it is "definitely on the table & being discussed"

Justin Verlander after yesterday's bullpen: "I feel really good. I'm definitely getting close to facing hitters. If it's not this time, then very soon. I'm hopeful. It depends on how I feel over these next three or four days, but it's definitely on the table."

Charlie Morton is really the only one from recent history that comes to mind. My buddy in the office at the time said they let him go because the had concerns about if his shoulder would hold up. Turns out his shoulder did hold up and he could have helped us out.Ag_07 said:All I do is Nguyen said:

We haven't had a lot of bad luck with others finding success after they leave.

Yup. We had to give up something to get Cole. As good as Hoe has been, his best year doesnt compare to Cole in Houston.

If you get a good Hoe you never want to let them walk away. You should only trade up to a better one.

If it were me making the decision to go after Snell or Montgomery I'd sign Montgomery. Snell has been too inconsistent but I'm not Crane so what do I know.
