Not sure his brand of inning-eating is going to fix the Tigers.

I'll be interested in the $ and years. He just had a monster year but he's 34 next season.

Short-ish term, high AAV

Basically the same AAV as Nola but only goes to age 36, not 37. Well done, Sonny. Cards aren't getting prime years of 31-33. I think we have our market for SP. don't be shocked when Monty and Snell get 23-28 per year for 6-7 years.

If the braves get Cease, do they have to give up Strider and more? I wish the Astros would make SOME kind of move already.

I doubt we'd get back enough to make it worth it. Players play up in their contract years, Breggy playing up for 1 year would probably provide more value to the team than whatever return you would get in a trade (unless you get offered some stud prospects).

It makes zero sense to trade Bregman if we're trying to win a title in 2024.

Agree that it makes no sense on the surface to trade Bregman if we're serious about a 2024 WS run. And Bregman is probably my all-time favorite Astro.

However, I don't think there is any harm in listening to what teams will offer. Just because we're listening doesn't mean we have to pull the trigger. But I'd be interested in seeing what other teams would offer. Especially given the state of our farm right now.

I have no idea if this is still a possibility, but I can confirm it's something that has been discussed.

The idea would be to sign Matt Chapman and trade Bregman for pitching.

Again, key word is discussed. I have no idea how in depth those discussions were. But it's something that's been talked about.

Man that would be rough for the fanbase to trade away Bregman.

Could benefit us but still that's a tough one that I don't envy the GM on having to decide

My first thought was you could sign Chapman if someone made the right offer for Bregman.

Depends what you get back and what you do with the money. Can you sign an impact starter with the $30M in cash you save?

Wonder if it's more they're listening now to gauge the market for the 2024 deadline.

That way if things go sideways next season and at the deadline they're at a point where they want to move him they have somewhat of a gauge to go off of.

I'd rather just roll with him in 2024 like you did with Correa a few years ago. I still don't see why we can't re-sign him

It's not like they are going to use that money for a Tucker extension or anything like that given what we've been hearing. So why not re-sign Bregman

Depends on what he's worth. People are trying to say he deserves Machado, Xander type money. We don't do those deals.

Could make some sense. He got a QO so that is a factor. He has elite batted ball metrics but they don't seem to add up to elite HR totals. I could still see him having a 2019 season in the bag.

Both those deals came from SD. We'll see what Chapman gets. Bregman will probably get 10-15% more and maybe a year longer.

I just struggle to see any logical GMs spend that kind of money on him. I'm guessing he is wanting 6+ years at at least 30 AAV. Thats just too much for a guy who hasn't made an all star team in 4 seasons

How are you saving 30 M? It saves 20 M from the luxury tax payroll and 28.5 M in actual money being paid. The assumption is you get pitching back which isn't free. Then you have a giant hole at 3B with no replacement ready. The only one close on the market is Chapman and if you're willing to pay him, then why aren't you willing to pay Bregman?

I am not even sure its the 30 AAV. A lot of guys are getting paid into their late 30s and into 40. Lower it to 23 AAV and that is still 9/207.

If you know you aren't gonna resign him it would make sense if you could help the depleted farm system with the knowledge you're losing him after this year anyways. Especially true if you can replace most of his production at third for this year

I'd honestly be okay with that deal. I'd even front load it if he takes it.

23 AAV will be nothing in 5+ years at around 2028 when players are making almost 50 M

That's fine if you are wanting to pause the dynasty and try to extend it. But that means we're lowering our chances of the postseason and playoffs significantly in 2024 when you have so many guys still in their prime or near prime windows.

I might be too. But Crane isn't based on everything he's showed us.
