"I think they're listening. Keep on eye on Alex Bregman." @JimDuquetteGM isn't sure the #Astros can re-sign their star third baseman next offseason.

I doubt we'd get back enough to make it worth it. Players play up in their contract years, Breggy playing up for 1 year would probably provide more value to the team than whatever return you would get in a trade (unless you get offered some stud prospects).bearkatag15 said:"I think they're listening. My first thought was you could sign Chapman if someone made the right offer for Bregman.texasaggie2015 said:
I have no idea if this is still a possibility, but I can confirm it's something that has been discussed.
The idea would be to sign Matt Chapman and trade Bregman for pitching.
Again, key word is discussed. I have no idea how in depth those discussions were. But it's something that's been talked about.
Depends what you get back and what you do with the money. Can you sign an impact starter with the $30M in cash you save?Farmer1906 said:bearkatag15 said:"I think they're listening. It makes zero sense to trade Bregman if we're trying to win a title in 2024.

I'd rather just roll with him in 2024 like you did with Correa a few years ago. I still don't see why we can't re-sign him
It's not like they are going to use that money for a Tucker extension or anything like that given what we've been hearing. So why not re-sign Bregman
Unless those "people" are "alex's agent" they're idiots.Farmer1906 said:tjack16 said:

Depends on what he's worth. People are trying to say he deserves Machado, Xander type money. We don't do those deals.
Both those deals came from SD. We'll see what Chapman gets. Bregman will probably get 10-15% more and maybe a year longer.Terminus Est said:Unless those "people" are "alex's agent" they're idiots.Farmer1906 said:tjack16 said:

How are you saving 30 M? It saves 20 M from the luxury tax payroll and 28.5 M in actual money being paid. The assumption is you get pitching back which isn't free. Then you have a giant hole at 3B with no replacement ready. The only one close on the market is Chapman and if you're willing to pay him, then why aren't you willing to pay Bregman?MaxPower said:Depends what you get back and what you do with the money. I am not even sure its the 30 AAV. A lot of guys are getting paid into their late 30s and into 40. Lower it to 23 AAV and that is still 9/207.tjack16 said:Farmer1906 said:tjack16 said:

I just struggle to see any logical GMs spend that kind of money on him. I'm guessing he is wanting 6+ years at at least 30 AAV. Thats just too much for a guy who hasn't made an all star team in 4 seasons

If you know you aren't gonna resign him it would make sense if you could help the depleted farm system with the knowledge you're losing him after this year anyways. Especially true if you can replace most of his production at third for this year

I'd honestly be okay with that deal. I'd even front load it if he takes it.
23 AAV will be nothing in 5+ years at around 2028 when players are making almost 50 M
