There goes our cheap lefty LF option.

That is certainly one option if you want to just reallocate that money to someone like Chapman or Montgomery. Chapman provides basically the same overall value so adding that plus some good prospects is a net organizational plus. Hard to say without knowing what other teams are interested and how any leftover money would be reallocated.

I hate to say it, but I don't think I'd mind trading Bregman for pitching. Ever since the scandal broke, he's never had the same swagger and attitude he did in 17-19. Whether he was getting "extra" help from the signs or he just liked being Captain Cocky, he's regressed from great to good and that seems to be who he is.

I think Bregman is now the 2022-2023 version of himself. A .260 hitter, 20-25 HR and 80-90 RBI who should bat 5th in your lineup.

If he was putting up 2018-2019 type of numbers then he'd be going for 10 year 300M type of money.

I'd give an initial offer of 5 years 125MM and maybe add a player option for a 6th year and go from there with negotiations

I think that has more to do with the baseballs than anything. All his barely over the fence Hits turn into outs. You can see the way he hits the ball hasn't chanced all that much (exit velo, launch angle, GB/FB/LD ratios, barrel%, etc).

Bregman is a dog. I think his on field play on both sides plus his presence in the clubhouse will be missed. Short of replacing him with Chapman (clear downgrade offensively) we can't trade him.

Who would be the trade pitcher that offers up pitching for a 1 year rental? It would have to be someone wanting to win now with a pitching surplus. Doesn't seem likely in the slightest.

This isnt trade Tucker crazy, but it's not far off.

Bregman's WAR last year was 4.9
Chapman's WAR last year was 4.4

For less than half the price, I say go for it, and I love Bregman.

That's because Chapman was in arbitration and Bregman signed an extension. Chapman will get 20+ AAV easily for several years. He's not exactly a budget option.

This is tailor-made for TB. Cincy is loaded with AAA-level talent ready to get their shot. TB will identify 2 and have 2 MLB starters for the next 5 years before the flip both of them.

If I mathed my math right, the braved extended Riley until age 36 for about $21.2 million per year. Based on that, would you offer Alex 7 years for $148 million?

They also did that by buying out years of control. We already did that which is why we got him to sign away 2 years of prime.

So what is he going to want?

That's the million dollar question.

For Riley - he made 3.9 M in year 2 of arb. I would guess he would have made something like 10 M & 17 M in those years. His extension was probably more like 8/185 which is still very reasonable for a guy that would have hit the market at 28. Braves do some serious voodoo on their guys.

If we take off the arb year, Devers got ~9/296 at age 27. Take off another 4 years at 31 M (Higher AAV for prime) and you get something like 6/172.

Then you have *******s who decided to give Manny 11/350 at age 30. SD & NYM really screwed up the market.

The projections for Chapman are all over the place. I've seen anywhere from 4/80 to 6/150 M. If he's getting 6/150 then at worst Bregman should be getting 7/175 (the Semien deal).

I think 7/148 would be reasonable for both sides. I don't know if either would be willing to do it though.

I hope the league doesn't base the market for free agent players on the desperate spending of an owner who only had a few years to live. Seems like he gave out wild contracts and pushed for reckless trades hoping to see his team win it all before he passed without much thought for what would happen after he was gone.

I really feel for padres fans, they're in for a rough fire sale soon, and they'll be down for years with all kinds of dead money they'll have to pay to get teams to take on those bad contracts.

It's admirable in the sense that they pushed their chips in, in search of a title. And seemingly it was done without the Cohen-esque eject button at the ready. It really seemed to juice their fan engagement and gave marketable players to a team that hadn't had any for decades. Not being able to maximize Soto's prime for the prospects they gave up is worse than the FA contracts IMO.
MaxPower

Semien is an interesting comp. Bregman is more consistent but Semien has much more upside. Putting emotion aside, I would rather have Semien than Bregman but it depends in part on positional needs.

If you are looking to get creative in a Bregman trade scenario then I'd suggest we pursue McMahon from the Rockies as his replacement. Maybe that's a 3 team or maybe a separate trade. He's locked up affordably through his prime seasons. He's also a good fielder and gives you the extra lefty bat. You could basically platoon with Dubon at 3B given both have traditional lefty / righty splits. It would still be a downgrade but gives you more long term stability and likely still nets you a prospect or two.
Farmer1906

I think the fanbase would riot if we replaced Bregman with McMahon before we had to. He's got a major K problem that negates his hard-hit pluses. His power pretty much disappears away from Coors. And his L/R splits aren't extreme enough that a platoon turns him into a good to great hitter if he plays 85-90% vs RHP.

The fan base will riot from any change to the status quo. McMahon would not be the worst option if we decide to move on Bregman (even after he walks we could still make a trade like this). The Rockies would probably be the easiest FO to swindle if we want to try and preserve our meager prospect total.

Its funny Passan put this out today. In the midst of the Stoops scandal a couple nights ago I got a text from a good buddy of mine that said the Stros are working on a package for Robert. He is another Ketch I would trust.

I get that, but I was more saying choosing to downgrade when you still have Bregman under contract. Let's win it all in 2024 with him. Then we can deal with the aftermath once the confetti stops falling. Eventually, Crane is going to have to spend some additional money to keep this thing going. The major prospect tree isn't going to bear fruit forever.
