Keep in mind Phillies are paying 95 cents on the dollar. We're not exactly in the same ballpark with our few FA offers to big names.

Remember that Dombrowski is in their front office. His process at every job has been to give out ridiculous contracts to try and win in the short term, and fire sell the crap out of the team after a few years.

Comparing the top 5 US starting pitchers FA over the last 3 seasons.

Nola is a horse and has good stuff.

Snell is nasty, but walks too many & isn't a horse.

E-Rod might be sneaky good value.

Monty is deserving to be in this group. He's been so under the radar before this year.

If Gray was younger, he might get 100-150 M too.

year 1 of his mega-contract -- his age 30 season -- is in the books

only 10 more years to go

he was awful April thru July

but great in August & September to salvage his season stats

1. Make the playoffs and it doesn't matter what seed
2. Have good pitching

So 5 times in 24 seasons has a team with 100 wins also won the WS. That's crazy.

In fact there have been more Wild Card teams win the World Series in that time span (8 WS winners from the wild card spot since 2000)

Since 2010 that's been the recipe for success. Minus Boston 2018, and Astros 2022 best regular season record hasn't come into play and the teams with the best record hasn't won.
ITs mostly:

1. Make the playoffs
2. Have players who were bad all season get insanely hot.

If they insist on 40% of the league making the post season. Then first round should be a game, followed the next day with a double header with then Divisional Series starting the day after that
