I think this search ends with Bagwell.

The guy with no experience in coaching except for a poor half season as a hitting coach a decade ago? No way Crane does something that stupid.

Crane thought he was a baseball GM last fall….
I think you're just making this up.

Did I say I was not?

Announcing you are firing your manager, who is one of your most beloved players of the of the last 20 years, by announcing that you're hiring another manager to take his job, is McMullen / Bud Adams level dick move.

Also shtty it's someone from within their division.

So first he says he's being posted today then 25 mins later comes back and says it could happen after Thanksgiving.

This is a perfect example what's wrong with the 24 hr news cycle and social media 'journalism'.

Hahaha!!! I didn't even catch that

But yeah you're right. Gets info from Heyman then after tracking it down has to tweet to clarify that the info was wrong.

I don't even think managers have that much impact over 162 unless they're outliers like Dusty who intentionally kneecap the team. I feel like as long as someone listens to the FO and has some decent sense as far as managing pitching, that's enough.

That salary for a manager is absolutely insane.
I heartily disagree.

Buck Showalter has had extremely talented teams and they have all ended in disaster.

Bochy is a great example of a manager helping to directly change the direction of a team with the Rangers this year. Yes, they moves they made at the deadline for pitching were awesome, he had that team balling up to the deadline.

Just two off the top of my head.

You could argue that Bochy let his team cough up the division and almost let his team collapse to the point of missing the playoffs altogether. If he gets credit for the players performing in the playoffs, he has to also bear the responsibility of struggling down the stretch.

Because we had Dusty ****ing up the lineup card day in and day out, I think we overvalue the impact a manager can have, especially for a team that has team leadership like we have.
I mean they lost Jung, Garcia and Eovaldi for large stretches towards the end of the season. Once those 3 were all back at the end they played at the level they did in the first half

The Astros had their injury woes as well the problem is once they were back to full health around July 27th they had a worse winning percentage to finish out the year than they did up until that point.

So Dusty got Yordan and Altuve back in the lineup...and did worse...lol

What's Neris expected to get in FA? 3/$35M?

I doubt he gets a 3rd year. Maybe 2/20.

I also doubt he ever pitches as well as he did this past year.

Which has me wondering if the Astros will/should offer him. We got bit with the Montero deal (unless he rebounds next year). I have a feeling we won't try to land Neris and that sucks.

Regarding the discussion on whether Counsel is a good manager, I went looking for this

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/managerial-report-cards-nl-wild-card-losers/

Quote:

Batting: D
Technically, the Brewers run a lot of platoons. In practice, they're just offensively challenged. Swap around Sal Frelick, Brice Turang, Andruw Monasterio, and Blake Perkins all you want; the result is going to be uninspiring offensive production. That's no reflection on Counsell; managers have to play the team as it lies, so to speak, and his task this October was to squeeze every last run out of a tough situation.

One thing you shouldn't do in that spot? Waste outs. Yet in the second inning of Game 1, with a runner on first and no one out, Turang dropped down a sacrifice bunt. This wasn't a bunt single attempt that led to an out, and it wasn't a solitary try that might have occurred without managerial input. He tried to bunt for four straight pitches, and he aimed straight at the pitcher when he finally got one down. This was him sacrificing himself, pure and simple.

"But Ben," you might say. "Brice Turang can't hit!" That's true; he slashed .218/.285/.300 this year. But he barely bunted all regular season despite that, because bunting is usually not a great decision. I understand that the Brewers are predisposed to try to score just a few runs and make them hold up, but they were torching Brandon Pfaadt. He only recorded eight outs, and he let eight runners reach base. You're just giving that guy a free out? C'mon, man.

Quote:

Pitching: A-
The Brewers were dealt a serious blow before the series started. Brandon Woodruff was ruled out with a shoulder issue before throwing a postseason pitch, which led to reshuffling behind the scenes. But they did a great job of putting their best foot forward anyway. The Milwaukee bullpen was elite all year, and Counsell is one of the best in the game at using relievers.

In the first game, Corbin Burnes ran into trouble early and never regained his footing. He walked the first two batters of the fifth inning, and Counsell wasn't messing around. He went to Abner Uribe, who had been electric since debuting this year, and Uribe got them out of the jam. Then he went by the book, using righties against the 3-8 portion of the Diamondbacks lineup and Hoby Milner against the switch/lefty/switch 9-1-2 portion. That left him with good matchups more or less across the board. He even saved Devin Williams to face the top of the order with a one-run deficit, getting his best reliever into the game in the place where his skills would be most helpful.

Subjective analysis, but interesting to talk about

Baez opts into 4 year, $100M deal with Tigers. Only relevant to us because it may impact how active they are in free agency.

If we didn't have the Montero deal signed I would be all for it. But $19M per year through 2025 for two non-closers would be tough

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but I don't have as much angst at 1B now. It's clear Abreu was injured and it's clear what it was and it seems to have resolved itself. He's not a very good defender but if he can hit like he did after he came back from the IL he's good.

He's certainly not the black hole he was for 4 months.

He did during the first three rounds. Still doesn't matter for a regular season award. But to the point, Tucker should have finished ahead of him, offensively speaking. Defensively, Semien was way ahead of Tuck.

He lit up the WAR calculation with good defense and base running.

A borderline top 15 offensive player in the AL doesn't really defense MVP consideration unless you steal 70 bases or play super elite defense at Catcher, Short Stop, or Center Field.

His wRC+ was below Chas & Yainer. Guys Dusty wasn't convince should start.

I'm with you. TED and a few others probably deserve it over him.

If it's 5 nominees I could see Semien.

I'd go Ohtani, Seager, Tucker, Semien and Rodriguez as my 5 nominees. With Luis Robert as my alternate
