This is mildly surprising. He played his way into a position where I expected it to be picked up. Now he can exercise a much cheaper player option or hit the open market.

Dodgers would be my guess.
Who the hell knows. That would be an absolute wild move even if it's just a DH for the first season. They'd have to just out slug everyone.
I got my money on the Giants for Ohtani.
Ohtani is going to stay on the west coast.
Somebody is going to have to explain to me how that move makes sense and the Rangers could carry that salary along with their others... but all my Ranger friends are already buying their Ohtani jerseys
The Rangers already committed five years to Degrom, who hasn't been able to stay healthy the past four years. Do they do the same for a guy that just had his second UCL surgery and won't pitch at all next season. If evaluating Ohtani strictly as a hitter, is he worth what it will cost to land him?

They'd have to make some trades to get some salary off the books (maybe somebody like Eovaldi). But I mean they might not care about the luxury tax. Plus they have enough cheap guys under team control.
I'd also imagine they include a bunch of opt outs after year two probably.

Wacha isn't really a high spin guy. Kind of goes against the mold of what the stros have looked for last few years.
Not saying he wouldn't be a solid back end piece but just different than what they usually target.

But that's nothing new. They've been interested in both of those guys for a while and had serious discussions on both at the deadline. It doesn't surprise me if there's still interest but I don't think we have what it takes to swing that deal. I'm sure we'll keep trying though.
