I think Pena is a huge bounce back year candidate. His eye at the plate improved significantly…

This usually precedes improved barrel%. He's gotta learn how to bring his 2022 swing into 2024 with 2023's plate discipline and lookout.

By no means am I saying he's Altuve, but Jose had a very similar improvement in his bb and k rate right before the power showed up

As far as the media saying our "run is over"

How many times have we heard that over the past few years?

This would be the 4th time

Post 2019: losing Cole, lost WS, lost Hinch, Lunhow etc. Run over

Post 2020: losing Springer, post cheating scandal. Run over

Post 2021: losing Correa, Greinke, lost WS. Run over

And now…. Apparently it's also over

Since our first "Astros run is over" post 2019

- 4 ALCS
- 2 Pennants
- 1 WS Title

Sports talk is worthless and just open time in demand of opinions to fill it. I don't even seek it out.

If half a season without some combination of Altuve, Alvarez, McCullers, Garcia, and Urquidy (and Verlander technically for different reasons) couldn't end it, a fresh season with the same pieces and an upgrade at manager and catcher won't.

At this point if the snakes take it by winning two in Philly then they've earned it.

"In" for 2024.

My 2023 season musings:

1. I finally discovered something I can thank Dusty for his (yet to be verified) decision to retire. We needed you when you joined the Astros but you should have recognized this time last year that it was time for you to hang 'em up.
2. What happened to Tucker, Brantley, Pena, and Valdez? When we needed them most, they were a collective "no show".
3. We were outplayed and out coached in game 7. Somebody on the bench didn't do their homework in preparation for the big exam.
4. Why can't umpires call balls & strikes? And, I didn't realize they can read minds.
5. I am amazed by the lack of basic baseball knowledge some of the post-season posters exhibited.
6. Thank you, Machete, for your leadership but it's time to move in another direction. Thanks for the memories.
7. I cannot reconcile how the Astros were 55-26 at home in 2022 and 39-42 in 2023 with virtually the same batter's eye. Unexplainable.
8. Altuve and Alvarez are absolutely amazing ball players.
9. I can hardly wait until next year. 2024 will be my 62nd season of loving this franchise.
10. Finally, thanks to you guys who've been here all season. I never fail to learn more about baseball and, specifically, the Astros from you guys.

Your #7 is a great point. Dominant at home in 2022 and putrid (mostly offensively at home) in 2023 with the same batters eye and virtually the same lineup.

Im pulling for the snakes. Don't count them out in the world series. They did take 5 of 6 vs rangers this season. Also, would love for them to stomp the rangers after all the whining rangers did when we swept them to win division. Plus if Philly vs Rangers world series, best we can hope for is another China virus to shut the whole d@mn thing down. Puke.

I think I found my favorite bargain bin corner outfielder for this offseason. Old man, past his prime Jason Heyward. The Dodgers signed him for league minimum and turned him into a .813 OPS / 121 wRC+ hitter. They were able to achieve this because he basically only played vs RHP (93% of his PA). He kind of fits the Astro's MO as he doesn't strike out too much. Plus he still moves fairly well for a 6'5" 240 34-year-old.

Man you and I think so much alike.

I want a bargain bin LHB to mix into the OF. Seems like a perfect fit.

I feel like a decent righty just mowed down our 6-9 hitters all year. 9 hole for sure lol.

But a solid bottom of lineup lefty will be a welcome addition.

It's obviously impossible to predict team health and we don't yet know what roster changes we'll make or who our manager will be, but the core is there to once again flirt with or surpass 100 wins next season.

But now that we'll have a catcher who can hit, it wouldn't be the end of the world to plug Pena and his gold glove into the 9 hole
This is what infuriated me (among many things about Dusty) is that as poorly as Pena hit this year he would have been more than adequate in the 9 hole and gives you an extra leadoff man in that spot.

Just sickening to think we had a projected 40 home run hitter just rotting away on the bench. I guess he better mail Dusty that thank you card now.

It's funny you mention Pena and Altuve in the same sentence like that because I've been thinking about them too as it relates to the outlook of the club beyond 2025.

At some point in the not-too-distant future, Altuve is going to start slow down a little. Eventually we're going to need someone to step into the "energy spark" void that he'll one day leave behind and become the team's new "tone setter".

Obviously it's extremely unlikely that Pena will replace Altuve's production, but I think he's a good candidate to replace some of his intangibles and possibly become one of the faces of the continuing dynasty. We don't need him to be great offensively to do that, but gold glove defense plus pushing that OPS up into the high 7s might be sufficient.

I hope you're right about the potential Pena 2024 breakout.

I think the most likely options. (Talking options that haven't been up yet. Not guys like Dubon, Mushinski, Bielak, Julks, etc. )

RHP Arrighetti
LHP Gordon
UTL Loperfield
INF Wagner

It'll depend on injuries, free agent signings, spring training, & how they do early in the minors.

I don't understand how the batters eye could be the problem when opposing teams crush in our ball park…

I've been thinking about this. Maybe it's possible that because the batters eye is all about providing a backdrop that minimizes distractions, you don't notice the distractions as much until you look at it repeatedly.

Sort of like you don't initially see people walking around the bud party deck until the first time and then you can't stop noticing it.

Also, in.

In! I was all ready to post the same thing I did the morning after the ALDS about losing way too much sleep for another week or so being on the east coast, but it wasn't to be. Good news is I get my normal sleep. Even better news is my wife will no longer have to listen to me ***** about Dusty and his constant stubbornness and constantly changing lineups.

As for the players, I hope we were reminded of two things this year. One, a team can NEVER have too much pitching. And two, old players get hurt and break down. Okay to bet on one or two, but bet on too many and the odds aren't in your favor.
