We had one of the greatest lineups ever in 2019 and barely got out of the ALDS.

Some wild Hader stats:

  • In 9 different months in his career, he didn't give up a single ER.
  • Only 7 months in his career has he had an ERA over 4. For comparison, Pressly (since 2017, same timeframe), has had 13.
  • The Astros have 17 seasons where a reliever had a 2+ WAR. Wagner had 4, Lidge & Dotel had 2, and no one else had more than 1. Hader has had 3 in his career already.
  • Hader's 42.2% career K% is the highest all time. Chapman & Diaz are the only others to top 40% at 40.3% each.
  • Even with 10.2% BB%, his K-BB% is also #1 all-time.
  • .155 BA against is also #1 all time.
  • Since 2017 he is #4 in saves. He's tied in 2nd in Saves+Holds since he wasn't a closer off the jump.
  • Since 2019 he is #1 in saves.
  • He's been in All-Star (5x) every year except 2017 (came up in June) & 2020 (no ASG)
  • 3x All MLB 1st Team
  • 3x Hoffman Reliever of the Year (NL)
  • The pitcher baseball reference says he's most similar to by age is Billy Wagner.

    I'm not complaining especially because I'm not sure there were better moves available. But how many games did the pen lose last year vs. how many did we never lead in? I feel like the latter is a much bigger number, but could be wrong

    I don't know how to find that out, exactly but we were tied with 4 teams with the 3rd fewest blown saves. 6th in ERA, 17th in FIP, 14th in xFIP, 7th in SIERA, & 18th in WAR. I'd argue it was very good, not great. But we're losing 4 key pieces. We didn't NEED Hader but we did need serious BP help.

    Another way to look at it. Our stats the 3rd and 4th time thru the order. 5.98 ERA (16th), .349 wOBA (24th), and games (1st). Maybe we'll trust the bullpen and goto them sooner instead of riding starters like Dusty did.

    To me, this helps our starters more that being said. Knowing you have 3 good relievers plus the potential of montero allows them to not have to go as deep in the games and cut innings effectively.

    I have to agree with some posters here that I am not too worried about our bats. IF ABreu can come back to form, along with Pena we will be just fine.
