To say blue bailed the Rangers out is just focusing on the 3-1 pitch and not even acknowledging the 1-0 pitch that was obviously a strike.

Not to mention this beauty early in the game

Other than this call in the pic above and then the ab in the 9th where the ump missed the two calls that evened out, I thought for the most part the ump was pretty consistent. He called it tight, but that was known and they told us that at the beginning of the game. Maybe I am forgetting a few missed calls, but I don't recall anything too bad.

Have the umpire scorecards come out yet?

Gray had a very good night! Hats off to him! Is he out of question to pitch another 30 tonight? I ask because I cannot make sense of the reason to pull him. Yes, we have a decent setup of 7th, 8th, and 9th inning pitching, but dang! I felt we should have road the Gray horse another inning or two. Let him pitch until he gives a base runner. Anyhow, the only reason to pull him would be to save him for another game. Is tonight out of question?

My guess is that he's gonna be the long-man in game 5 if Eovaldi goes belly up

I think this is it. He's not used to pitching on back to back days, so doubtful for tonight I assume. And we may have to use up a good portion of the bullpen tonight, depending on how things go, so need someone for Wednesday.

As far as last night, I wouldn't have minded to see him stay in. But I assume the Bochy/Maddux logic was that we had a well rested 7th/8th/9th inning bullpen crew ready to go. Save some of Gray's pitches for another night. Regardless, it worked.

I would go ahead and pencil in Gray in for Game 7 start.

The more I keep thinking about it, the more I lean towards it having to be Jankowski in for Adolis. You can't have Grossman out there playing defense in the wilderness that is Arizona's outfield.

That's what I was thinking. But, if we have a lead and for whatever reason either Evo or Monty can't go long, I can see Gray being used.

With a chance to win the Series in Game 5 or 6, you would prefer not to use Gray, but you definitely would if the situation required it.

Hopefully the potential absence of Garcia lights a fire under the five or so other batters who haven't done much lately.

Zero chance Perez pitches again in this series unless it's mop up duty or the 15th inning.

I know he's forever your "basically a number 1 if not for...", but G2 is likely his last appearance as a Ranger if we win a WS.
Wasn't G2 his "if not for..."

I agree that was likely his last appearance.

BINGO!

I am eagerly awaiting an explosion from Hiem, Lowe, Jung, Garver, Taveras, and Semien. That is 6 batters that have been super quiet lately. Semien finally had a spark last night, but I would like to see multiple hits from this crew!

Figure if we don't see Adolis tonight we won't see him tomorrow night either.

My worry if we don't see Adolis is what it means for Seager. They would feel like there's no reason to throw a ball in the zone to Seager without Adolis in the hole or the on deck circle.

What happened with him? Wasn't he good last year?
He was pretty solid.

The two big issues with Perez have always been 1) Can he avoid disaster when there is a struggle and 2) Can he rise to the big moment.

Last year, when a call didn't go his way, or he gave up a HR... he was able to self-correct and avoid the meltdown inning. It was the only year where he was able to do that consistently. This year he was great to begin the season, but started to fall apart as he saw more and more pressure by others outperforming him. In the big moments... he is hit-or-miss.

He'll sign-on somewhere and be a pretty decent pitcher.

Yeah, no Garcia equals not a single pitch for Seager to hit. Where will the production come from then? Hopefully the others step up...just need to scratch a couple wins out here (so easy to say!).

Perez was pretty much the same pitcher he's always been this year. Last year was an anomaly. He's a pitcher who can give you innings with an ERA around 4.50. Not great, not horrible. Definitely not worth the 19.5 million he's being paid this season.

Perez was the ace last year. Let that sink in.

With Adolis out we have to keep Semien at lead off, and probably move Carter to 3rd spot again. Who's our cleanup? Garver?

To his credit, Perez was really good last season. The mistake, IMO, was anyone assuming that would suddenly be the new, improved Martin Perez. There was just too much of a body of work to believe that to be the case. Players have career years sometimes - last season was that for Perez.

I actually think it's Grossman in the lineup instead of Jankowski. I bet they bat him at 3 and leave the lineup the same as yesterday.

With it being a bullpen game for the D-backs and Grossman being a switch hitter, I'd be shocked if it was anyone else. Use Janko as a defensive and/ or base-running sub later in the game.

While Adolis' defense and arm are incredible, feels we need to replace him at the plate more, so whoever has the best stick we gotta play him.

I'm very conflicted on what to do the rest of the series. I had to miss games 1 and 3, couldn't post and only check the game cast every now and then bc of work. I watched game 2 and posted, and the rangers got their downs blown in. I didn't miss a game all playoffs until the world series. Do I not watch tonight and see how it goes? This is tough.

Also Grossman actually hits better from the right side. With a bullpen game you want it back and forth as much as possible. Mantiply pitching the first world mean you'd Rather Grossman hit in the first against the lefty. You don't want Seager and Carter together in a bullpen game.

I'd be interested in how they determine the +/- impact.

G2 went 9 for Az 1 for Tex.

This shows 8 missed calls. I agree with the 3 listed as being missed calls that all went to Az. However, the #2 was a makeup for the blow call early to him and should have balanced. We also know several misses pointed above from Scherzer.

In the UmpsScoreCards, a missed call is 1.5" or more from the Zone.

I thought the Ump did a decent job balancing his misses. Especially to Moreno in the B9. He missed a pitch both ways and IMO became a non-factor. Even if you try to say at 3-1 a missed Ball has psychological damage, it would certainly change the hitter's approach at 2-2, and he likely swings at a close pitch #5.

Keep in mind, Adolis could still DH. While he won't be able to play the field, even if he is 75%... with a couple pain meds, he could swing the bat 3-4 times at least to start the game.

Mantiply is a Lefty, so if Adolis gets only a single AB as a Righty... if he gets on, PR for him (if he doesn't hit a HR).

At a minimum, there is a psychological aspect to be made against Mantiply and forcing him to pitch to Semien and Seager.

Yes, I watched as Gibson hobbled to the mound and hit a HR in the World Series between the Dodgers - As.
