Most teams tried to slip players through Waivers during this period of time.

A player with a big salary might make it through and the team could then trade him. If he were claimed, the claiming team would then be responsible for everything remaining.

A player with a decent contract might get picked up. You could negotiate with the team, and revoke the waiver if you didn't come to an agreement.

Most teams did this as a matter of process for the inevitable "what if."

The difference now is that once the Trade Deadline passes, when you put the player on Waivers, you can't "pull them back" if you decide you don't like where they may go, or what you'll get back. I believe for these players, the claiming team will only owe the remaining salary.

This is unprecedented because the rules have never been like this (maybe last year).

So, I don't know the process... I'd assume each player passes sequentially and in order of when they were Waived.

I'd also assume that once a claim is made, the winning team moves to the bottom of the list, so that one team can't stack all players.

I'd also assume each team will have already had to have a spot for the Claim, meaning players might get Waived in order to make space for the potential to add a player.

Giolito is at 6.89 ERA with 6GS for Anaheim. ($10M for 2023)
Moore has given up 4ER in his last 3 App totaling 3.0 IP. ($7M for 2023)
Renfroe hitting .239 ($12M for 2023)
Grichuk hitting .140 since arriving in Anaheim. ($10M for 2023)

The Rangers are on the line for Luxury Tax. Anything they pickup could cost them elsewhere with penalties.

I could be wrong, but the other thing in waiting until now... if they were to clear Waivers, a team could then sign them for league minimum, giving the Angels less financial relief. In this case, if you wait for the player to clear Waivers, he won't be eligible to play in the post-season... so, you are forced to claim them.

I dont know the answer here so maybe someone can chime in but seeing all these players coming available……what happens to a player with a no trade agreement in his contract??? Shouldnt he be able to refuse the waiver? I know it really wouldnt make sense to refuse to go to a team headed to the playoffs, but everyone has their reasons.

Clevinger is the only player I see right now that looks interesting.

Most of the players have $10M+ salaries, which means they'll be substantial on the payroll.

Boxscore shows both Renfroe and Grichuk as being in the Angels lineup.

Guess they'll be placed after the game?!

I believe that is correct about once a team claims a player that the claiming team moves to the end of the line. I know that's how that works in fantasy football and in the NFL.

Anybody have the umpire scorecard for the home plate ump from last night? He seemed to be pretty bad with that outside strike to RH batters. Tonight's home plate ump likes that outside strike to RH batters as well....

Mets catcher is WAY out of the catchers zone with the way he extends his leg. Technically that is an automatic ball. Guess it's just another rule that's not enforced
