I'd venture to guess that most starts after you've been traded aren't terrific for anyone. Just a lot going on with a lot of upheaval, and pitchers are creatures of habit.
I keep seeing people reference his 4+ ERA but it was 4.01 coming into this game. Yeah, that's over 4, but a little different than 4.99, which is also 4+.
Regardless, go out and throw a "quality start" of six innings and three runs every outing and you're sporting a 4.50 ERA.

But if he gave up 4 runs in 6 innings, that's an ERA of 6. The more innings pitched, the larger the denominator and the longer it takes to bring it down.Proposition Joe said:

Your math skills are fine, my point wasn't that it was statistically impossible to do - just highly unlikely to have a 4 ERA and no games with more than 4 er... especially if you are a TORP.

So if he pitches on average what he has so far this season, he should get through 6.2 innings this game without giving up another ER.
