Astros farm is depleted so my guess is they get full JV salary with prospects going to NYM or they gave up major league controllable players with some lottery tickets and will get some salary relief. Just my thoughts how this would work.

Verlander is a good get, but holy hell is it terrible business to let him walk in the offseason just to turnaround and pay prospect capital AND money to get him back.
They are sending their only top 100 prospect (#68), last year's #1 pick

Astros with a major steal. Verlander's no-trade basically allowed him to pick where he wanted to go out of his suitors, and he obviously chose/felt-comfortable with Houston.

Clifford and Gilbert without getting any cash on a multi year deal is nuts. Very much an all-in this year deal
Traded their 1 and 2 (Clifford is a huge riser). Makes the Scherzer deal look a helluva lot better. Pretty massive overpay imo
"Top prospects in your system" doesn't mean as much if they aren't top prospects in baseball.
Gilbert is 80ish or so overall. Clifford isn't Top 100.
And still not completely clear on the salary side of things, but just like Scherzer it's an overpay for 2024 (especially if Mets kick in nothing) but that's what it costs to get him for the playoff stretch.
We would have been all over the equivalent deal if we had the opportunity.

As they should. Their minor league system isn't exactly stocked with talent, so the window is likely closing, they need to try to stay relevant while they can.
Right now if I had to handicap it:
With Eovaldi and Heim returning (at somewhat normal production): Texas -120 to win the division

Looks like the Mets may be footing a big part of the bill on this deal too. That's gonna be a lot of money to players playing for other teams next year.

I think the point is, the fact Gilbert was their highest prospect and he is only 68th (specifically) and he was their only Top100, speaks to how much thinner their farm will be moving forward. It can all change with injuries and jumps, but yikes.
