At this moment I would be willing to give up Carter for Snell.
Giving up our top prospect, who is also regarded as a top 10 prospect in all of baseball for a 2 month rental would be the worst trade in this franchises history. Absolutely not.
We gave up Justin Smoak and Blake Beavan in 2010 for a couple months of Cliff Lee. I don't think people lament that one.
I hated the Smoak draft and was very vocal about it.
That was such a mess.
In 2009, we ended up having:
MLB: Chris Davis 23
AAA Smoak 22
AA Moreland 23
Davis went on to develop ADHD and got an AUE for Adderral and Crushed the ball for Baltimore, Smoak had a relatively decent 11 yr career for Seattle and Moreland served us well for 7 years.
IMO, when it comes to DH/1B, they can be easy positions to fill and to have a surplus. Trading off a 1B is not usually something to fret especially when you have a surplus like we had.
My issue with Smoak was that everyone touted his beautiful perfect swing, but he was poor at making good consistent contact with it. Most people believed we were Cliff Lee away from the WS.
Evan Carter could be a solid OF for 6 cheap years. More than Snell, we need a couple RH RPs. I would LOVE adding a player like Snell, but that is a WANT... not a NEED.
Snell-Eovaldi as our 1-2 going into the ALDS in a 5 game series against a team's #3-1-2 would favor us to get to the ALCS, for sure.
