Good lord. Of course the A's would give up a solo shot with two outs and nobody on.

We should be very thankful that Oakland took a game.
94chem,
That, sir, was the greatest post in the history of TexAgs. I salute you. -- Dough

I was surprised to see someone mention Eovaldi was #1 in AL ERA. Guess I fell asleep.

Top 4, with their Last4 GS:
Eovaldi (Tex): Last 4: 24.0 IP, 6 ER *2.25*
Cole (NYY): Last 4: 25.2, 8 ER *2.81*
Framber (Hou): Last 4: 23.1, 15ER *5.79* <- Battling leg stuff
McClanahan (TB): Last 4: 16.2, 13ER *7.05* <- Battling back stuff

Three of the most oft-mentioned SPs on the market:
Lorenzin (Det): Last 4: 23.2 IP, 5 ER *1.91*
If you look at his last 3 games: 18.2, 0ER

Ohtani (LAAA): Last 4: 22.2, 15 ER *5.97*
Giolito (CWS): Last 4: 21.2, 12 ER *5.00*

I know small sample size, but at least worth noting. Lots of fans trying to determine what their team needs.

I think Cole is the front runner by a decent bit as things stand today. He's been nails the whole season from the start, has awesome strikeout numbers, most pWAR, and has completely carried that team.

Well Eovaldi has carried this staff (a first place team) all season and has a better WHIP, ERA and more wins. Not sure how you can say Cole leads him by a good bit.

Eovaldi isn't in the same galaxy of strikeout numbers. He's not that far behind overall, but I think the gap is about a car length for lack of a better phrase.

So strikeouts are what determines CY young now?

They matter a ton whether you like it or not, and he's right there with Eovaldi in basically every other category.

Just a reminder that Jankowski only needs 73 home runs to take the single season record from Barry Bonds.

Ah, that's why. It is a local channel from your area. The rest of the channels/channel #'s should be the same, but the local ones are different.

RedSox/Mets on ESPN it is then for me...

The Rangers' 59-41 record matches the best 100-game start in franchise history (2012, 2010, 1999).

Lots of folks down on the Rangers the last couple days but coming out of the ASB they had to face Cleveland, Tampa Bay, and the Dodgers (combined record of 167-133). Meanwhile the Stros had to play the Angels, Rockies and A's (combined record of 118-183). Despite the overwhelming favorable schedule from the Stros, the Rangers picked up a game in that stretch.

Now the schedule lightens up a little after Houston. Need to take advantage by starting with a series W in Houston.

Are you sure these stats are correct? I was told we didn't play anyone and that the Astros were gonna take the lead after we stopped playing the bottom feeders?

Oakland is so freaking bad. After finishing a series with them, your strength of schedule remaining goes way way up.

Houston has 15th strongest schedule remaining at .500

Rangers have 22nd strongest schedule remaining at .492

Both the Rockies and A's are very very bad baseball teams. We should just be glad that they both took a game from Houston and got off their schedule.

Win 1 game in Houston and we should be fine. Although, we've won a series down there without Seager once and we can do it again.

More my concern.

Rangers:
@ Houston (3)
@ San Deigo (3) <- Should be looking to sell.
--------------------------

Trade deadline.

v CWS (3) <- Should have been sellers.
v Miami (3)

So not sure why, but MLBTR has gotten it in their heads that Stroman and Bellinger to the Rangers is a rl possibility. Dedicated a big part of their podcast yesterday to ti.

Haven't had a chance to listen today - if someone else has, let us know what's up. Those guys typically are pretty well connected on what's coming down.

That sounds like the type of move we would make. Bellinger adds some pop to the lineup but we're not tied to him past 2023, and Stroman slides in as a Top 3 starter that is also controllable next year.

Obviously we want to "go for it all" (Ohtani or similar), but right now solidifying a division lead AND having pieces for next season would be a great move IMO.

The thing with Stro though is he's got a player option for next year, can't remember how much it's worth though. And with the season he's had I've heard he's likely to opt out to get a better deal. So teams are wanting to treat him as a rental, but the cubs are asking for the price of 1 more year left of control.

The one I listened to was answering a reader/listener question. I didn't take it as they thought it was going to happen.
MrCoachEricTaylor

Yeah, I'm not against it! Just as long as they don't overpay. And he may would be interested in coming to a place like this to compete.

Ahh yes I overlooked that. Well ultimately that lowers the Cubs ask price unless you can get Stroman to agree to waive it for a trade (which I don't see him doing).

Hell no. Stroman has been struggling lately and with Seager bouncing on and off the IL, we need Duran.
MrCoachEricTaylor

Yeah, with the injury to Seags I'm pretty hesitant to part with zeke now.

Anyone know why tomorrows starter is TBD? MLB app has Gray, TBD, Heaney. Has anyone heard why Nate isn't listed?

Things change and move so quickly this time of year it's hard to give a concrete update. It's a crazy (but fun) time of year.

Here's what I do know: Jim Crane has met with Dana Brown and told him to be aggressive. He didn't say he wants to be aggressive. He told him to be aggressive. Crane wants to win.

I think the next week or so is going to tell us a lot about Dana Brown in comparison to James Click. Click was great at his job but he was a little trigger shy at times. He was hesitant to give up big assets. Brown and Click are very similar in that they're much more aggressive than Click.

Now, what does "aggressive" look like? I guess that depends on the market. The Astros have likely been one of the most active organizations in baseball this year as far as working the phones and checking in on players who may be available. They've inquired on just about everyone.

What positions are they looking for? Well, just about anywhere and everywhere they can possibly upgrade, but I think starting pitching is priority number one. Bullpen help is two and a bat is three.

I've also been told that Jim Crane fully trusts Dana Brown's ability to build a farm system. Brown is known for finding kids who develop and progress quickly through the minors. This would make losing guys like Gilbert much easier to swallow. At this point, I wouldn't consider anyone in the farm system untouchable and I expect the Astros to give up a player or two that will make us all cringe a little bit. That said, I would be pretty surprised to see guys like Gilbert, Melton, Clifford, or Baez moved for a rental.

Don't be surprised to see a bit of a shakeup on the big league roster as well. Small market teams value guys who have team friendly contracts and years of control. Julks, Meyers, France all come to mind. I've also been told not to be shocked to see Chas or Pena dealt. Do I expect those two to be moved? No, because the Astros are asking for a lot for those guys and it would likely be a part of a deal for a star player in return. I'm just telling you guys not to be shocked if it happened.

I don't want to predict anything because it would just be a guess. I can tell you guys for a fact that Houston is being very aggressive but there's so many moving pieces and things out of their control. I'm very confident that moves will be made... and it wouldn't shock me in the least to see a move happen that makes everyone say "whoa, what?!".

Does this remind anyone of Ketch's writing style? "I feel confident things will happen, but I'm not saying they will."

It's going to be Bradford or White. This is related to skipping Eovaldi this time through the rotation.
