So, what's the formula tonight? This dude for Arlington is good, and skunked us on Sunday.

Here's hoping we get the JV that is on his game. I feel a 3-2 type game coming.

Reality is Arlington is far from out of it.

I believe the gameplan for today needs to be to work counts and drive pitch count up against Montgomery. Need to set that tone in the first inning. 'Stros got to get to their bullpen early tonight.

Obviously, get guys on in front of Yordan.

I believe JV will live in the upper part of the zone with his fastball and have a successful outing.

If the Astros can get 2-3 off Montgomery and get him out by the 5th inning, I feel the Astros will be in a really good spot to win the game.

Seems like the recipe is to put up a big crooked number early and keep mashing. Let's do that.

We've got JV on 4 days rest and Abreu, Neris, and Pressly didn't pitch last night. Throw in Blanco who hasn't pitched yet in this series. The pitching is lined up - just need to get to Montgomery and keep the bats hot. Winner of game 5 is probably going to win the series.

I think the winner of the game last night is going to win the series. Thought this before the game.

Playoff Dusty is an absolute stud

Which begs the question...

What's the biggest discrepancy? Regular season Dusty vs playoff Dusty or Home Astros vs Road Astros

Here's me take:

He's basically the same in game in both the regular season and post, except he does find situations during the regular season to test guys to see what they can handle when it comes the post season.

Then he uses those guys in those situations, and for the most part, they are successful.

Now, the non-use of guys like Diaz during the regular season hurts. However, if Brantley wasn't back, 100% Diaz would be DHing.

I think the biggest thing this season that is pretty clear, is if the Astros had Altuve for the entire season, I think this team is much closer to 100 wins.

The MLB radio guys were talking about this the other day.

They asked the question: would John Schneider of the Jays have left Eovaldi in with bases loaded 0 outs in G2? The answer was no chance. Schneider is 100% an analytics guy and he would have looked at the numbers and spot and taken him out. Because that's what he does.

The comment about Bochy and Dusty was that they both look at analytics but also manage by gut/feel and experience. And that old school style led to leaving Eovaldi in. Now the fact that it worked is not evidence that's the way to manage.

They also commented that some managers are just saying "well tye FO and analytics guys say do 'this' so if it doesn't work it's on them. I'm just following their roadmap." Dusty and Bochy are more willing to do what they want and if it doesn't work they will take the heat.

I personally think that playoff Dusty works because he's not over managing like a lot of guys do. He's the opposite of Roberts. Rob Thompson in Philly over manages badly. He's bringing high leverage pen guys in for the 5th and he's gotten lucky twice when his pen was basically down to scrubs in the 9th. IMHO that was his mistake last year against us. He kept using those arms early and when we scored off them he had nobody better behind them.
I've said this before and I'll say it again, the managers who overmanage can't stand the camera on them in the dugout in tight spots. I guess it comes down to insecurity...they think "I have to do something to show that I'm MANAGING, otherwise they'll think I don't know what I'm doing."

The older managers who have been there, done that, don't feel that type of pressure in big moments.

Sure. Much harder to do against Montgomery though.

Man, can you imagine if the Stros put up 3 or 4 in the first how much that will be in the Rangers head?

I get what you're saying and I think there is some validity to it, but Dusty left Urquidy in too long and got baled out by Stanek's 1 pitch DP. The plan should have always been to ride Urquidy as long as he was effective. He was lit up pretty good in the second and then he picked up right where he left off in the 3rd. There is no reason to push him when we have a fully rested Maton, Stanek, and Montero to along with 2 starters in France and Brown.

it's hard to tell especially with the knowledge that the front office makes the roster and lineup choices in the playoffs
They do not make those choices. It's a group decision. They ultimately have the final say, but they don't take the lineup card out of his hands.

It's been pretty amazing watching how your take on this has evolved.
I don't know what you have against me, but it's getting really old. You've come at me throughout the year for no reason.

Altuve's assault on the playoff record book continues.

Games played 100. That's #7 all time
AB 414 #4, Posada is 3 at 416
PA 461. #6, justice is 5 at 471
Runs 85 #2, Jeter is 1 at 111 but in 734 PA. Williams is #3 at 545 PA
#1 in runs in a single season 2021
Hits 112 #4, ManRam is 3 at 117
#3 in hits in a single season 2019
Total bases 207 #4, two tied at #2 at 223
Singles 67 #7, #5 and 6 are Posada and Man Ram at 68 and 69
Doubles 20 #5, #4 and #3 are Posada and Papi at 22 and 23
HR 25 #2. Mr Clomid at #1 with 29
RBI 51 #9. Breggy is #8 at 52
K not in the top 10. And that's with all the games and PA. That's pretty remarkable.

He will go down as the single best overall playoff player of all time. Jeter has the counting stats because he basically has 40% more PAs than the next guy, but Altuve is going to be the GOAT.

Driving up pitch count on Montgomery will require extending ABs by fouling balls off and getting runners on base. Both him and eovaldi were pounding the zone in games 1 and 2. If they took pitches they were in immediate holes.

Gonna have to string together hits.

He's been really, really good since he was traded to the Rangers. H'e been pretty lock down since the trade deadline.

It will be important to inflate his pitch count up as much as possible, or at least make him pitch in high leverage situations. Even though Montgomery K'd Yordan 3 times in game 1, if you get guys in front of him, those ABs become high leverage, and you hope increases the odds of a mistake.

The players have said lefties are difficult to see with the batter's eye at minute maid so hopefully they can pick up his pitches better up there in Arlington and hit him around a little better than the first game.

its the home road split. i think we had the 3rd best away record in the MLB this year, and a bottom half home record.
Supposedly no team has reached World Series with a losing season home record before. Another first when it happens.

I think the best case scenario would be to put 3 through the first 3 innings with a lot of traffic, and have JV held them to 2 or less through the same. In the 4th if you get traffic on, you force Bochy into a tough scenario of pulling him in the 4th or not.

If it plays out that way, I think the Astros will be in a really good spot.
