Not trying to be a wet blanket. Loved the win. But I felt some overmanaging going on last night from Dusty. Great move bringing in Neris in the 6th. When we went up by 5 runs in the top of the 7th, there was no reason to bring him back out with 2 more games coming in a row in a 7 game series.

When we went up by 4 runs in the top of the 8th, there was no reason to bring in Abreu. We ended up using our trio in a game that was honestly thoroughly dominated.

It all felt very Dave Roberts to me and completely unnecessary. Anyway, had to get that out.
Disagree here, man.
Last night was a must win situation. Every game is a must win moving forward.

Damn...nearly 1/5 of the called strikes were actually balls. That is pretty terrible. I am ready for the robot ump ERA to begin.

Did we hear anything from Framber about why he stunk it up in G2? Hopefully it was something specific and correctable.

I don't think it'll ever happen at the MLB level, because it'll take away from some of the influence they have over desired outcomes.

Started off unlucky, got rattled, made an error, got more rattled... typical Framber unfortunately. We need him.

I was anti-robot umps, but after seeing it for two years here in Sugar Land, I love it. Bring it on in the bigs.

Pitchers, catchers, and batters can all challenge a call, then it shows the pitch up on the big screen (animated) with the result.

I was against it initially because it took some of the gamesmanship out of the game. But watching how badly the stros have been jobbed by a few of these guys in key at bats has made me a fan of the bots.

Excuse the ignorance, but how does it work? Is there still a human ump behind the catcher? How is the pitch call displayed to the players/fans?

I like the way the minors have implemented it (the ones that have) where it is a challenge system and they display the pitch on the big board. Although I am not familiar with all the specifics on # of challenges and stuff. But call shame to the ump when Laz calls one of his patented 10 inches off of the plate strikes.

Ump behind the plate who has an earpiece and hears the call and then signals it after each pitch.
Ump still makes the call on plays at the plate.

I don't see why umps would ***** then, unless they have an axe to grind and want to influence the game. Would literally have to stand there and just do what you're told on your earpiece. Don't have to get in arguments with players or coaches and don't have to toss anyone

I've been to a few games in SL with this in place and I don't understand the challenge system. The system is calling balls/strikes. You challenge, and they show what the system called. How do you overturn the computer's call?

Not sure the system is making the call. As i understood it, which may be wrong, the ump made the call and the player had the opportunity to challenge it on occasion- which is when the roboump data came into play.

In these games, aren't umps calling balls and strikes? You can challenge the umps call and it'll go to the auto/robo system to confirm or overturn?

I was watching the post game show pretty late last night and they had a whole segment of fan video reactions to various points in the game and over half of them were credited to @AGSWIN

Pretty cool

That's just a waste of time. If you can show the replay on the screen, you can just show every pitch live on the screen.

Umps still are needed for live play and nuance of the game inside the game. Just take out balls and strikes since it shouldn't be subjective.

It sounds like the minors were actually doing it both ways last season:

https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/the-automated-strike-zone-is-slightly-different-at-triple-a-in-2023/

Quote:

The automated ball-strike system (ABS), known colloquially as robo-umps, uses the Hawk-Eye tracking system to determine whether a pitch is a ball or strike and relays the call to the home plate umpire via an earpiece. ABS was used in 11 Triple-A stadiums last year and was expanded to all 30 stadiums this year. The Pacific Coast League has been using ABS since Opening Day. The International League began using it April 25.

There are two key differences in how ABS is being used this year at Triple-A.

The first is that "full" ABS, where the system determines balls and strikes, is only being used for the first three games of each series. The final three games of each series are using a "challenge" system where the home plate umpire calls balls and strikes and teams can challenge calls. ABS is used to verify whether the call was correct or not.

The challenge system was only used the final month of last season in select parks at Triple-ACharlotte, Round Rock, Sugar Land, Tacoma and Las Vegasand only on select days. Even in that limited time, it quickly became the preferred option among players and coaches, leading MLB to expand its use in 2023. The challenge system was also used in select Arizona Fall League games after last season.

Each team gets three challenges and retains a correct challenge. Challenges can only be initiated by the pitcher, hitter or catcher and must be made immediately after an umpire's call.

Not sure I like that system, specifically if it's only those 3 who can initiate the challenge. I can see one knucklehead teammate using all the challenges and pissing everyone off but also seems like it would take more time
