how tf does Maldy have a higher baserunning run value?
Yordan has held up when he has had opportunities to advance & been thrown out.

How they track it:

Quote:

What is this? A Statcast metric designed to use data to evaluate the performance of baserunners and outfielders in taking or preventing extra bases.

How this works: Based on inputs including runner speed, outfielder throwing arm, runner position on the base paths, and outfielder distance from both ball and bases, an estimated success probability can be created for each opportunity. With that information available for each play, the player's actual success rate can be compared to the estimated rate and the cumulative metric can be created, accounting both for bases taken (prevented, for outfielders) and chances taken or not. This does account for extra bases taken by batters or runners on batted balls; it does not include stolen bases, as it's about taking extra bases against fielders. (Read more about this here.)

How to read it: "From 2020-'22, Trea Turner added 9 extra runs on the base paths, the most in baseball. In that time, Michael A. Taylor prevented 13 extra runs from baserunners, the most of any outfielder."

So by taking in runner speed, any extra base that Maldy gets is a bonus and leads to a better base running metric since he would normally be out if trying to stretch a base regardless of the the outfielder's arm? He gets the benefit of the doubt since he is slow as ****.

It is more so trying to trying to determine the skill on the base paths. We can see how fast someone is. The fast guy is generally going to be better on the bases. But they may not be smart at it. See Altuve.

Haha... I love Altuve but his baserunning has made me pull my hair out at times during his career.

Ok, I am going to throw this into the meaningless category for Yordan then. I never like seeing him sliding into a base. When the run/ extra 90 feet is important, he is usually being PR for anyways.

baserunning seems like an "eye test" metric

watch the games...and you'll see who knows how to run the bases

We got Astros baseball, a division race, AND college football this weekend. I absolutely love it fellas.
and, for those of us that care, Nascar's playoff start. It really is the best time of the sports year.
Funny you say that... I was never a NASCAR guy until I spent a couple years in South Carolina. They love it up there. I got invited to the night race in Bristol and it was incredible. Now I love it and I'm a big Ryan Blaney fan.

I'll give you Blaney, and raise you Kyle Larson.

I lived in Bristol when Earnhardt and Gordon were battling it out. Lived next to the transmission mechanic for McClure's #4 Kodak car. Fun times back in the heyday of the sport's popularity.
I love Texas Aggie sports, but I love Texas A&M more.

It's popped up a couple of times that Correa leads the league in grounding into double plays - currently at 28 (the next closest player has 24). So it's a little funny that after catching up on the thread I popped over to Fangraphs and happened upon this article on base running value. Once he gets on base he struggles too.

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-runners-who-make-the-least-of-their-legs/

Quote:

Carlos Correa seems like he should be a good baserunner. He's a young shortstop with great instincts in the field. He's tall and lean, with a long pair of legs. In his rookie season, he stole 32 bases in 37 attempts across Double-A, Triple-A, and the majors. Yet despite what you'd think, Correa is decidedly not a good baserunner. In fact, he's been the least valuable runner in the game this season. Over the past two years, he has been worth -13.6 baserunning runs (BsR); only Christian Vzquez (-14.0 BsR) has been worse. Surrounded by catchers, first basemen, and aging veterans, Correa is a fish out of water at the bottom of the BsR leaderboards.

The Twins shortstop recently opened up about his baserunning to Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com, calling himself "slow as f-k." It's no surprise Correa is down on himself amid a career-worst season. Moreover, in a textual medium, it's hard to gauge just how tongue-in-cheek his comment was. Still, whether he was dramatizing, joking, or a bit of both, it's worth clarifying that Correa isn't quite that slow. His sprint speed, as measured by Statcast, ranks in the 34th percentile slow, sure, but it's not like he's walking around the bases. There are 177 players with a slower sprint speed this season (min. 10 opportunities) and 115 with a slower home-to-first time. If Correa is "slow as f-k," I don't even want to know what expletives he'd use to describe Miguel Cabrera and Yasmani Grandal. Correa may not have much speed to work with, but even so, his problem is that he isn't making the most of the speed he's got.
. . .

Texas Terry to Gordon to Earnhardt Jr and now to Bowman.

I do like Buescher with the Texas connection and hope he makes a good playoff run here.
