Sure, Rodriguez and Suarez getting hits and driving in runs is one thing, but the Dan Smiths hitting .215 for the season going 9 for 12 this weekend is quite another.

This. Peña isn't struggling. This is exactly who he is. A below avg hitter who plays good defense.
but that was not the plan -- not the hope -- when he replaced Carlos

Correa's OPS in his first 2 seasons: 857 and .811

Pena is way behind at the plate

he will be limited to the 8-hole or 9-hole with a .670 OPS

and his .606 OPS vs. right-handed pitching is almost platoon worthy

looking at 2022 vs. 2023 data on Maldonado...

last year he played in 113 games and had 344 at-bats -- ranked 8th on the team in at-bats

this year he's played in 90 games and had 279 at-bats -- currently ranks 9th on the team in at-bats

with 37 games to go...his 2023 usage will be very close to his 2022 numbers

Looks like we're playing Maldy as if he's a 28 year old top catcher in baseball and not the aging veteran that'll be gone next season that he is

I would have never expected Maldy to play this damn much going into the season

I was looking at that earlier. Almost 26% K rate and 67 wRC+ facing RHP. That is practically unplayable. He had a 91 wRC+ vs RHP in '22.

10 games left in September. If this "let's get out sheet together meeting" works, will need to see 7-3 in that stretch.

Let's start with 3-1 over Sox.

We will learn a lot about this team during this series against the Red Sox. Pretty much every game going forward is must win.

While this series is key to get back on track, "pretty much every game" is not a must win. Just start winning series again. Finish next 39 at 24-15 and we likely win division.

Pretty cool, this is a scouting report on 18 year old Chipper Jones by the White Sox. Wonder whatever happened to that guy.

True. I should have said every "series" is must win. Although if our guys want to go 39-0 I'd allow it

I think we go 23-16

If Seattle doesn't cool off we will be battling the Rangers for a wildcard spot. Houston, Texas, Boston and Toronto battling for 2 wildcard spots, both on the road for round 1. The Rangers did worse at home than we did and may be in real trouble.

We need to end Bostons chances and have a 5 or 6 win week to solidify our position. Seattle plays Texas 7 times and Houston 3 times in the final 10 games of the year. If they stay hot they will win the division.

To be fair. That scouting report could have been 100% correct for the 8 games he watched. I mean he had about the same offensive output as Big John has for us sense coming up in those games and half this board wants to send him back to the Mexican league.

Scouting is really only about the obvious. Anything else is a SWAG on 10 years into the future. A lot changes. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. Unfortunately these scouting reports and combines often define someone's future for them.

Man, as a coach myself it's hard to not say that every game is a must win. Is that realistic? No, so I get what you're saying. Winning series down the stretch is crucial. But we also need to have a sweep or two in there to make up for some of the recent blunders. 12 games combined against Detroit, Oakland, and KC...we need to come out of that maybe 9-3 or 10-2. Obviously better than that would be great as well. The three games each against Texas and Seattle are absolute must-win series for us.

If we even make it to the WC, the Mariners are going to stomp a mud hole in us like they have done all year.

Assuming we make it, that means we will have patched some holes. Regular season record does not have much correlation to short series randomness.

Seattle is such a weird / interesting team.

Sub-par pitching, horrible batting average. We lit them up and their best batting average is .280 and it gets ugly from there.

They mash the ball when they do hit it (either Ks or hard hit balls). That homerun yesterday was Sammy Sosa esque and it was from like a .220 hitter.

Our pitchers do a horrible job holding Seattle runners. Diaz never had a chance yesterday.

They played really sound defense to our subpar defense.

Someone mentioned it before, but if we don't get better starting pitching then we aren't going anywhere. We don't have anywhere near the consistent offense to overcome piss poor pitching. We need to win some games when we score 3 or 4 runs and this is even more important in the postseason.

Sub-par pitching? What sport are you watching lol

They will likely lead the league in ERA at months end after this soft stretch

All these guys are more than a year from even hitting arb and Angelos is already telling his fans the team will do nothing over the next 4-5 years to prepare to retain them. Masterclass.

Imagine if Crane said "it will be hard for Kyle Tucker to be a career Astro without significantly hiking prices" but he said it in 2021. (Even if that's already what he's decided deep down…)

I would take Chipper Jones at 1B right now.

I was watching the ERAs of the pitchers they had yesterday at the Juice Box.

Seattle's pitching as a whole might be the best in MLB right now.
And I definitely didn't think they played really sound defense…but compared to ours, it was pretty good. Our defense has been awful compared to what we've become accustomed to the last few years.

I like that they do it and get shut down by his HRs, but I'm sad that the same aholes are probably going to show up at his induction in the years to come and boo him when he gets in.

I had to unfollow this thread this weekend. Yall are wild. Baseball has ups and downs. The world isn't over. Yall gotta chill. We play 162, not 125.

On the flip side, this weekend was about as big as possible for Seattle. The odds reflect it.

Seattle is hot. They're hitting in a way where they won't continue though. They have a 137 wRC+ in Aug. That is good for 4th best offensive month all season behind Braves in June, Rays in Mar/Apr, & Braves again in Aug. Their BABIP for Aug is .355. They'll cool down offensively. We'll get another shot at them.

In general, I am not a huge fan of players-only meetings. I am glad this team feels the need to do so even though its pacing to 91 wins. August is pacing to be our 3rd best month even with the sweep. The Rangers mirroring us gives us some room for error. Eventually, we do have to kick it up a notch to take the division.

It's funny how much our opinions of Astros baseball have changed in the last 2 decades. I grew up Idolising Biggio. If you had asked me before that clip, I would have wrongly assumed Biggio's stats were better than Altuve's comparably. I think we lose individual standing of our current guys because they've accomplished so much more and have a better supporting staff of so many good players.

It was pretty much just the killer B's back then and the most they accomplished was getting swept in a World Series and yet many of us put them higher on the pedestal than Altuve, Correa, Bregman, Yordan, etc. Maybe because it was more about our childhood?

Worried about Javier tonight. Boston can run out 6 lefties in their lineup. Javier has had his struggles this year, but it's so much worse vs LHH.
