My grandmother used to claim she knew Sparky Anderson growing up, as they both hail from the incredibly tiny town of Bridgewater, South Dakota. She would tell us that she saw him play a lot when they were in school together and you "could just tell" he had a mind for baseball.

When I was in high school, I got a giant baseball almanac and found out that Sparky Anderson was born in 1934, meaning that my grandmother was 14 years old when he was born.

Moral of the story: My grandmother, God rest her soul, was a liar.
