For the average Joe with a crap ton of money? Maybe. Though as a native Texan who would never live in California, their weather is multiple magnitudes better.

For Kate who is a starlet and socialite though, I would think LA is much better stylistically. However, knowing how life is in Houston and the club culture from a first hand, that may factor in greatly as well.

Kate frequently still comes and visits the Houston area. Some of her closest friends have a weekend place down the road from me and I know Kate has been here at least twice over the summer. They don't hate TX that's for sure. The whole "round top/chic junk gypsy" upper echelon status thing is very real these days.

I'm still skeptical since we balked at a massive JV contract in the off season but now want to give up top prospects and take on most of his contract when we are starting to get healthy.

What makes you think we're doing both? That makes no sense and hasn't been reported anywhere.

I'm just going off the rumors, as is everyone else. Why would it not make sense to give up prospects and take a bulk of his contract?

Because it's typically either or

Either we give you more/better prospects and don't pay as much or you take less on the prospects and we eat more of the money

We're smart enough to not do both

Trades have to have balance. No team is going to take on his contract and give up big prospects.

Fan stuff - pulling off JV and Cease would be something.

Anyways I'm thinking they end up with one of the Tigers starters, another bullpen arm, and some random lefty bat. Overall will feel like letdown but will be a solid haul. With a little health and recovery for the pitching staff will be in great shape for the rest of the season.

It's going to be interesting to see how long the Astros are willing to wait for JV to make a decision. Nothing would be worse than to have him stretch this out up until the very end and not be able to pivot and make other moves. That's what has me nervous about this whole thing.

I can only assume that Dana and Crane are communicating. Like I said before, the JV negotiations are solely being done by Crane. Brown is working the phones with other teams. I'm not necessarily a fan of that dynamic, but we will see how it plays out.

Rosenthal: Astros remain involved in Justin Verlander trade talks, sources say

Is Astros owner Jim Crane swooping in again for Justin Verlander?

The Astros traded for Verlander at the old waiver deadline in 2017. Crane personally negotiated a second contract between Verlander and the club before the lockout in 2021. And now Verlander is available again, with the Mets trying to trade him before Tuesday's deadline at 6 p.m. ET.

Talks are fluid, and subject to change. But multiple sources briefed on the discussions told The Athletic on Monday that the Astros remain involved in the Verlander talks. Some believe a return to Houston is the future Hall of Famer's preferred outcome, citing, in part, his relationship with Crane.

Astros general manager Dana Brown said on the team's pregame radio show Sunday that the team was not in the market for a starter unless something came available that made sense. Verlander would fit that description, and sources said the Astros have again shifted their focus toward adding a starter.

Verlander, 40, has a full no-trade clause, enabling him to effectively control the process. The Dodgers also have spoken with the Mets, and their farm system is far superior to the Astros'. But if the Mets intend to trade Verlander, and the only place he will go is Houston, they will have little choice in the matter.

The Mets' trade of Max Scherzer, in which they sent the Rangers approximately $36 million to secure a top 100 prospect, infielder Luisangel Acuรฑa, provided the template for a deal involving Verlander. The difference is, Verlander is pitching better than Scherzer was, and the Mets will want an even greater return.

If the Astros cannot offer the same caliber of prospect, perhaps they would take on more of Verlander's remaining contract, which includes the rest of his $43.33 million salary this season, his $43.33 million guarantee next season and a conditional $35 million option for 2025. The option would become guaranteed if Verlander pitches 140 innings in 2024 and finishes the season healthy.

Crane knows how much money the Mets sent the Rangers. He also knows he might be the only game in town. And as the hours to the deadline tick away, the pressure is mounting on the Mets to get a deal in place so they have enough time to secure Verlander's approval and clear other procedural hurdles.

Crane effectively acted as his own GM for much of the offseason. At other times, such as in his negotiations with Verlander, he has exerted a strong voice in baseball operations. If he wants Verlander and can figure out how to get him, little else will matter.

Hmmm. If I was going to pick a time to go 'all in' and deal the farm it would be now to maximize winning over this and next season.

Beyond this window you have free agency looming for core players.

You have a GM whose rep is built on building a system, go for broke now and give him that 2-3 years to replenish the farm.

Meanwhile go after more hardware.

Assuming a JV deal centers around the financial aspect, empty the farm to land Cease.

I would hope Crane is smart enough to give the Mets/JV a deadline sometime today that would give them time to make other moves before the deadline.

I understand waiting as long as possible to get your guy but you can't sit on your hands all day for a maybe.

Yeah at what point do you put a hard deadline on it? How long do you wait before you "settle" for the next best option. Trade deadline is also so fascinating to follow, especially this year when the AL is wide open.

I guess I look at it differently, you keep working the deal until it is dead or time is up. If you keep working everything else and something presents its self which also fills the need and would make you no longer do the deal for JV they might call the Mets and say we have another dealโ€ฆyes or no. At that point you move on.
