Here are some blurbs from the Dodgers beat on the athletic. (released 1 hour before Rome's piece)

Quote:

The Dodgers have also, as the Times reported Friday, expressed interest in trading for reigning Cy Young winner Justin Verlander, league sources confirmed to The Athletic.

The pursuit is complicated, if not unlikely, with hurdles that make it difficult to complete such a deal. But the Dodgers are in position.

Quote:

Given the Dodgers' wealth of young, controllable pitching depth, it could be a match. The Astros and Rangers (at least before the Scherzer deal) are among the clubs interested in Verlander, as The Athletic's Will Sammon and Tim Britton reported, though no talks had gained much traction with any club as of Friday afternoon.

Quote:

...And the Dodgers may be wary of the fact that Verlander would be 42 years old by the end of his current deal if the option year vests, particularly at his price point.

Then the article goes on to talk about basically all the remaining big names on the market and then all the Dodgers coming back from injury. I would say the smoke from Houston sounds 10x more likely than anything coming from LA at this point.

So Eduardo Rodriguez, Lorenzen, Montgomery, etc... Framber shakes out of his funk, Urquidy returns, Javier tweaks a little bit and problem solved. Plus now you are in a position to handle 2024/25 free agency with Altuve, Bregman, Tucker, Valdez, etc..

Let's also recognize that Alvarez and Altuve have played something like 10% of this season's games together. Their return is going to fix a fair amount of issues (in addition to playing Chas and Diaz more, if Dusty will figure it out.)

Yup, I will wait until any deal is coming from multiple sources.

Yeah maybe those deals are better, I'd be happy with them. But I think doing nothing would be a mistake.
IMHO.

Urquidy isn't going to light the world on fire and may have lingering injury risks.

The alternative to SP is to stack as much BP talent as possible, but requires more room on the roster

Astros are supposed to have a shttty farm system yet are able to pull Pornstache out of it to make 14 MLB starts with a sub 3.00 ERA and a 6-3 record so far, for example.

Which is why this is all goofy in the end anyways. We pulled Alvarez out of the heap somehow from the Dodgers for Fields. We always seem to trot out 1-2 SPs every single year despite having "no depth" in the minors. Additionally, our "big" pitching prospects haven't hit for years (Whitley, Bukuaskas, etc).

The media sucks balls when it comes to rating guys.

The elephant in the room here is that JV made news last year by not having a sucky start in the WS.

Don't get me wrong, McCullers did. But he and Garcia also combined for 127 innings of shutout baseball that closed out Seattle in game 3 of the ALDS. JV also did his part before the WS.

I think maybe that's the issue. You just don't have the depth and experience of last season's rotation with JV, Garcia, and McCullers not here. Sure, you're probably not going to win every game in the playoffs, even in a title run.

The Astros let George Springer, as close to the embodiment of the current Astros era as there ever was, walk in free agency. Same for Correa, because there was a kid in the wings who could do the same for 1/30th the cost. And, yes, JV, who is probably 2nd to George.

There's something to be said for the 'big game pitcher'. JV helped greatly to get to the World Series twice and the team was able to take it from there. I guess that's the value.

If we truly wanted to get the party started we would observe that Pornstache had a better last five starts than Scherzer did.

Patton was wrong. Americans like a winner but most importantly love a name brand.

Top 3 ballpark for me outside of Houston. They did an amazing job making it feel classic.

You can attribute more of the spin/movement decline last two years to the elimination of spider tack than old age.

The Dodgers signed Yordan out of Cuba for $2M. He wasn't some unknown scrub prospect we found in the bowels of their system.

I want to say we're past that and now we're going to drag our huge World Series nut sacks across the rest of the league.

But. Yea honestly we probably will score 17 the next 6 games combined

Just a couple of weeks ago we 12 against the halos and the next day scored 9.
Would love to see that again today.

From Bob Nightengale's article this morning...
Quote:

The Seattle Mariners have informed teams that closer Paul Sewald, outfielder Teoscar Hernandez and first baseman Ty France are available in trades.

Quote:

Considering the Padres are projected to lose more money this year than any franchise but the New York Mets, and have grossly underperformed, other teams still fully expect San Diego to trade starter Blake Snell and All-Star closer Josh Hader by the Tuesday trade deadline, but not All-Star outfielder Juan Soto.

Quote:

The Chicago White Sox are telling teams that ace Dylan Cease and left-handed reliever Aaron Bummer are off limits, but they would be willing to trade reliever Keynan Middleton.

They would listen for offers for shortstop Tim Anderson and will give away catcher Yasmani Grandal.

Quote:

Baltimore Orioles GM Mike Elias doused the idea that the Orioles would be aggressive at the trade deadline and try to reach the World Series for the first time since 1981, pleading patience.

"We're trying to win, we're in first place, it's awesome," Elias told reporters. "We want to make a deep playoff run. We want to get in the World Series.

"But unless we have information that the world is ending in November, a big part of my job is worrying about the overall health of the team over the next several years."

Simply, the Orioles are following the blueprint of the Astros, where Elias was the assistant GM, tearing a team to its studs, never giving up a prized prospect in a trade, but adding free agents to fill any void.

"We can't set the minor-league system on fire just because we are in first place," Elias said. "It's our job to balance all that."

Quote:

The Mets plan to unload outfielders Tommy Pham and Mark Canha by Tuesday after trading away closer David Robertson to the Marlins.

Was entertaining last night with my own pool party so completely missed the game. Now I can't watch today to hopefully replicate it. Oh and here she is a day late but still as fine as ever:

Lol at Oakland. By that graph, they shouldn't even have played this season.

My gut feel so that we eventually pass the Rangers. It may be in mid to late September, but I think they will learn a hard lesson that you can't buy your way into a World Series.

I'd start a career highlights montage of Scherzer on the video board.

Based on 2023 performance? JV
Based on recently Postseason history? JV even with his struggles. Max has had a dead arm and France hasn't had any.
Based on full career? Max
