I've thought about it and I don't think he gets traded.

Ohtani is a cash cow for the Angels with ticket sales, merch, advertising etc etc.

I don't think Moreno wants to give that up even for just the rest of the season at the expense of building a winning team for the future. That's not what he wants. He wants the money and the exposure.

I think you have to trade him and get a haul if you can't re-sign him... but I think if Moreno thinks he's got a shot at 63 then zero chance he trades him. And that's looking more and more likely

That was a Siri bat flip. He pimped it hard.

Dude is just an unreal talent. Will be nice to see him out of our division.

Hopefully the Mariners don't sneak in. I don't mind the Angels, but like any Houston fan, I can't stand them.

Plus I love Ohtani. The dude is just a phenom and it's so cool watching this kind of greatness and something that no one thought was remotely possible anymore. Let alone at the level he's doing it at. And he seems like a genuinely good guy and a great ambassador for the game.

If a Ohtani went to the NL and Judge has stayed healthy it would be his to lose.

Now? If I had to guess it would end up being Garcia? 24 HR and 80 RBI. He's on pace for 40/130.

Question of the night.

If Ohtani gets traded to the NL, who wins the AL MVP? Can he somehow win the NL MVP? Can he win both? I would assume he doesn't win either, but he could've one of the greatest seasons ever without any hardware.

Me and my buddy were discussing that the other day. I'm sure they would never do it no matter what stats he put up, but it would be hilarious if he wins the MVP in both leagues

Anyone it Denver for the game tomorrow? I live right next to Coors Field and would be up to grab a pre-game drink with any fellow sh*tposters.

the MVP question is an interesting one

has there ever been a league MVP that played for 2 different teams or 2 different leagues in the year he won the award?

as previously mentioned...the chase for 63 might keep him in Anaheim

Bonds hit 70. The Angels are dumb enough not to trade him.

just watched a cool documentary on Matt Cain's perfect game vs Houston on 2013. Altuve, Castro and JD Martinez are mentioned.

I believe 2014 is the only season of the 21st century...

in which neither the Yankees nor Red Sox made the playoffs / wildcard

Not at all. He seems to take it stride, owned it, and put it in perspective.

I love this reaction

I remember that Yankees team. Pretty solid lineup, but they made a ton of starting pitching free-agent pickups with guys that were early 30-ish veterans, but still looked to have something in the tank…and every single one of them was immediately washed. It was unbelievably bad.

You hated to see it.

2017 Astros did two unforgivable things

- completed the Ken Burns trail of tears by taking down all three of the biggest brands in the sport in one post-season

- denied the Yankees their AL pennant in every decade since the 20s streak

I demand to be equitably compensated for my time, so it better be 6-0.

(A new college grad said this phrase to me last week so I thought I would recycle it… haha)

Following up my previous post. Starting pitchers overall are going about the same IP/start compared to last year -- 5.2 IP per start. Last year, the Astros were at the top of the list of getting innings out of their starters. This year, the Astros are still near the top (#4).

So, how about relief pitchers?

2022

Astros had the lowest number of innings pitched from the bullpen. Interestingly, the Astros and Philly were #1 and #2 in lowest RP innings pitched.

So far in 2023

Astros are #4 in lowest RP innings pitched.

I'm sure there is some variations that screw this up--teams that like to use a 1 inning starter likely make that teams info an orange when comparing to the traditional apples.

So, it seems like the Astros are doing an above average job of getting innings out the starters, and are limiting usage of RPs decently, so it seems like it is more an issue of usage--Pressly, Maton, Abreu, and Neris have had to eat up more high leverage innings. Ideally, another RP arm or two would lighten the load for these guys.

Currently, the other 4 in the BP are
Stanek--needs to control the walks a bit, but ok.
Martinez--doing decent job as multi-inning guy.
Montero--nothing to say here that hasn't already been said
Kuhnel/Gage/Mushinski/Blanco/whoever--need to get some quality innings out of this spot
