Dusty would have just sat there and chewed on his toothpick rather than be bothered to stand up for his players
Funny watching Dom Chiti hobble down from the BP (26 seconds mark) as if he is actually going to do something.

As much as we joke about Dusty not playing Diaz enough, he has now started 10 straight games (which yes, even surprised me), and while he will most certainly get a day off soon (perhaps not tonight now that after Chaz's antics in the 9th last night, he will DEFINITELY be sitting the bench today), I think Diaz may have finally pushed himself into a starter role (.299/.309/.598 over 26 starts since June 1)

Checking in on the Astros young OFs...since June 2nd:

Julks leads with 102 Plate Appearances in 27 games. In that time he's doing pretty well. .322/.402/.467, 9 SB, 3 HR, 147 wRC+. Oh, and his walk rate has jumped to 11.8%, and K down to 18.6%. That's such a drastic flip from earlier in the season.

Chas has 91 PA, .309/.385/.519, 4 SB, 4 HR, 153 wRC+. 7.7% BB, 24.2% K.

Meyers 77 PA, .197/.299/.303, 4 SB, 1 HR, 72 wRC+. 13.0% BB, 22.1% K

Julks since June 2nd (Full Season)

87.6 EV (87.6)
15.1 LA (17.1)
36.6% Hard Hit (36.4)
7.0% Barrel (4.6)
--
31.0% LD (26.6)
35.2% GB (37.0)
35.8% FB (36.4)
8.3% IFFB (14.3)
--
33.8% Pull (42.8)
40.8% Cent (32.4)
25.4% Oppo (24.9)

Nothing earth-shattering that he is doing differently with balls in play.
  • Fewer INF popouts, more Line drives (why his LA dropped)
  • Going up the middle more
  • The largest difference in the K/BB ratio

He won't be able to keep up this run, but no reason he can't stay avg-slightly above if he keeps hitting line drives & drawing some walks.

If he keeps that up it's good news

if the Mariners thought it was bush league...they will retaliate against Chas

they are that kind of team

Every team is that kind of team
think back to last year when Kirby plunked Altuve after a perceived slight (by the Mariners dugout)

Altuve was not involved in the slight, but was designated for payback

some teams would have let it go

Servais had a pitcher hit an Astros batter after his own player fouled a ball off himself. You can't rationalize stupid.

Julks kinda reminds me of an NBA microwave scorer off the bench. Like Jamal Crawford or Dennis Schroder. They're not good enough all around to be a foundation piece on a team, but they can get hot quick and give you a boost offensively.

Saw an interesting stat on the Rangers broadcast last night. Texas is 2 games under .500 when they draw three walks or less, and it seemed to happen in about half of their games. They rake with four or more.

Anyone know the Astros splits? I would expect it is even worse.
I love Texas Aggie sports, but I love Texas A&M more.

Dana has to be smart. He needs to hold on to Chas and get rid of Jake.

Chas has shown enough, and he is controllable.

Dusty needs to have his farewell tour. He's done well here, and tip of the cap for all that he did after the cheating scandal. The Astros need Espada to lead next year.

You hold on the Chas regardless of what Dusty does. Jake is expendable. I'd say Julks -- with his age -- is also expendable.

As far as trades go -- I still want Giolito. If we can't get Joc from SF, I'd like Benintendi. Or, here's someone I just thought of -- Ryan McMahon. You get a LHH, someone who can play 1B, 2B, 3B and DH -- then send Dubie to the OF.

34-18 when we draw 3 or more walks
15-21 when we draw 2 or fewer walks

Benintendi has not been anything special this year (.282/.349/.372/.721 100 OPS+) and he is owed another 66.4 M over the next 4 seasons. Hell no!

McMahon isn't a terrible idea. He hits righties really well. But he also has a significant Coors boost (.170 OPS points more at home than away for his career). He also isn't cheap for such an average player. 56 M over the next 4 seasons.

And if teams wants ML ready OF and insists on Chas vs the other two…do you allow him to hold back trades?

Some other random splits

20-7 when we hit 2 or more HRs
14-8 when we hit into 2 or more Double Plays (surprising, but maybe makes sense since it likely means we have runners on)
29-5 when scoring 6 or more.
0-4 when scoring 0.
6-4 when hitting 4 or more doubles yet 11-0 when hitting exactly 3 double.
10-4 when leaving 10 or more on base
16-5 when hitting at least 1 sac fly

So you are saying if we take lots of pitches instead of hacking away we win more often?

Seriously, the eye test here is really not that hard to use. When we swing away we struggle. Witness last night. 3 innings of 6 pitches. Not only are we not on base but the turn around time for our starter is minimized to an extreme.

I'm not saying we should not swing at cookies. But working counts has lots of benefits. And it's the biggest downside of Dubon leading off.

It depends on what the return would be. If Chas is part of a package for Luis Robert, I'm all for it.

I forgot to look at the contract numbers. With that -- I'd agree with you, unless CWS eat some of that money.

Re: McMahon -- 56 over 4 isn't too terrible. That's similar to the flier that the Astros took with Brantley. McMahon hits for more power, and is more versatile.

I completely agree. It also leads to the opponent's starters going 6 and 7 innings and not allowing the Astros to get into their bullpen where they can take advantage in the long run. Feels like the Astros have let far too many starting pitchers go into the 7th against them this year as compared to previous years.

Your post specifically mentioned Giolitto, if you want that trade and it requires Chas are you making it? Obviously anyone is willing to trade the existing CF to get a batter CF'er…

To include Chas, it has to be more than a rental. Giolito is a rental.

I have no idea, I found it in the Twitter replies to something a few weeks ago. I assume it originated from a Halloween thing.

That doesn't tell the whole story. His BA on the road is significantly lower too (.271/.219). Maybe he just isn't a road player.

In high leverage, OPS is .917, BABIP is .360. Late & close OPS is .804 with BABIP of .361. He also has 11.1% BB%.
