I'll say it. The last 5 weeks he's upped his BB%, lowered his K% and become a solid ML hitter. He's a defensive liability but so was a Barry Bonds.
He never had a great arm, but that's a small part of being a great OF. He played CF early in his career and ran like a gazelle. He won 8 GG over 9 years and while the GG was more of a popularity contest back then, he had a 3.6 DWar one season, which led all OF and was 2nd in MLB only to a prime Ozzie Smith.
Again, not a perfect metric, but by that metric he was one of the top 3 defensive OF in all of baseball early in his career and nothing like what you are describing.
