Do you think he just forgot how to hit?

I think the bigger question is can he actually come back at all.

It's been a long time since he's seen big league pitching. He's 36 years old. He's coming off a major injury.

I highly doubt he's going to step in and make a major impact. The front office isn't taking him into consideration as they approach the deadline.

He could absolutely surprise everyone, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

I do agree that whatever Brantley gives will be sort of a bonus. I'm good with going with Chas/Meyers in CF and adding an impact bat in LF via trade.

And that's the plan... at least the last I've heard.

In case anyone is out hitting up garage sales next weekend

Pretty cool to see Josh and the family have stuck around and planted roots in the Houston area.

I imagine we are treating 2023 Brantley like 2005 playoff Bagwell. Bum shoulder and pray that you can get some veteran DH/PH at-bats out of him.

Dana keeps talking about quality LH bats that can play multiple positions, but those are nearly non-existent on bottom feeder teams.

Looking at the Cubs, I am wondering if we have been looking at the wrong guy. I fear Bellinger was a hot start more than a real turnaround. My confidence is not high that he would be an impact bat.

But what about Ian Happ? Pesky, quality switch-hitting swiss army knife. His case is not typical in that he is on a long term deal (3 years, 61M remaining), but I wonder if a deal for Happ and Smyly could be an effective trade.

Chicago likes Happ a lot. We inquired at the deadline last year but the asking price was way too high. I would love it though, but it's doubtful.

Smyly is a name I've heard mentioned a few times.

I'm coming into town for the game on July 8! May need to attend a garage sale!

I think the fact he just signed an extension means he's not going anywhere.

I could not be happier for him. Hope he keeps this up throughout the remainder of the season. If he does, you can put him behind Yordan and suddenly, this line-up is what we hoped it would be.

I just have this feeling once we get Yordan back that things are going to get fun.
We made the regular season look easy 4 of the last 6 years. It's easy to get used to that as fans.

For a variety of reasons, this season hasn't been as easy. But that's ok. I'd argue that we looked worse in 2020 than we do right now during the regular season. We still got to within a game of the WS.

Catching the Rangers would be great. Maybe they'll fall back or we'll get super hot later this year and track them down. I'm not too concerned with that though. Just get in the playoffs healthy and let the chips fall where they may.

As frustrating as the offense has been this year, we have a realistic path to a big rejuvenation in the second half. We need Yordan and Altuve in the lineup at the same time (which has been rare this year). We need Tucker, Bregman and Abreu to carry the loads they've proven in their careers they can handle.

Contributors like Diaz, Pena, Dubon, and Chas look alot better as bottom-of-the-order lineup lengtheners as opposed to dependable top-of-the-order run producers, which is what we've had to cast them as for parts of this season.

Adding a bat or two on top of that would be nice. Farmer made a great point recently about Dana's 2021 offensive acquisitions that were mostly under the radar but set the table for a World Series run. Maybe he can do the same this year.

I'd really like to add another top 4 pitcher though. Partially to fill out a playoff rotation, but partially because I think Hunter and Javier will need a quick break in the second half.

Anyway, it is possible that it's just not our year. Maybe the injury bug continues to bite. Maybe we just run out of gas from all the high stress baseball we've played the last few years. Oh well. We'll rest, regroup and show up in 2024 with a new manager and a few more years of open window. But as frustrating as it is right now, there's definitely still a path.

We'll said.

It's fun to have a summer chase. I'm not going to lie. After the deadline the last few years I was bored just waiting on the postseason. Obviously, I want to win and win big but having more than 13 games in October that matter is entertaining.

To be fair, Bellinger is 5 for 13 in his last 4 games. Maybe he's finding his stroke again after being out for a while. It'll be interesting to monitor.

I suppose we just need to hope that the next month might cause another overachieving team or two (Giants and Wade?) to fall to earth and sell, because the type of bat that Brown keeps talking about just isn't out there right now.

As it stands now, I think you would be better off simply looking for the most potent bat regardless of position that you can find on an expiring or 1.5 remaining deal and plan to play Yordan in LF more to free up DH ABs.

Quote:

28. Houston Astros Ty Floyd, RHP, LSU
DOB: 8-28-2001 | Height: 6-2 | Weight: 200

Nobody helped himself more in Omaha than Floyd, who showed that he could go through some of the best lineups in college baseball with his unhittable fastball. The Astros immediately ended up linked to him, in part because GM Dana Brown was overseeing the draft in Atlanta when that club took Spencer Strider and his unhittable fastball. I've mostly heard the Astros with college players Joe Whitman has come up, Colton Ledbetter earlier this spring.

Scouting Report: Floyd finished his year by setting a CWS record with 17 strikeouts against a strong Florida lineup. His fastball is elite he got 26 swinging strikes on the pitch against the Gators as hitters don't see it at all, coming in at 94-97 mph with great ride and some added deception from a short and lightning-quick arm stroke. The knock on Floyd is that he doesn't really have an average second pitch. He throws a slider and curve but neither is better than a 45, without great spin or break, and his changeup has good separation but not a ton of action. He walked just under 10 percent of hitters this spring for LSU, which he'll have to bring down in pro ball regardless of the development of his offspeed pitches. Scouts are already comparing him to Strider for his ability to miss bats with his fastball alone, and I think you can project him as a starter given how well that pitch plays and the way the delivery works.

Dana Brown is very highly regarded in drafting/development. This should be a fun draft.

Javier's fastball velocity and spin are way down. Also walk % and whiff % are up a lot.

It's not so much forgetting, but your body has to respond. Father Time is a mutha ****er. It's not quite like riding a bike either. Hitting a baseball is the hardest thing in sports. A combination of rust and bat speed slowing down doesn't scream savior to the season.

Honestly all I want and expect from Mike is a bit of consistency in his approach and quality ABs down in the bottom of the lineup. Just be a slap hitter who doesn't K much and puts together good ABs.

Honestly wouldn't mind him hitting 9th behind Maldy and basically just move runners and turn the lineup over.

Maybe his steady approach rubs off on the rest of the guys and they go back to grinding out ABs.

Agree Floyd makes a lot of sense. Our pitching is even worse than hitting on the farm and he could be a fast riser. I also think the bats in rounds 2-3 look more appealing than pitching. College players are also generally easier to sign.

To be fair we have Framber, Javier, Garcia, Urquidy, McCullers, France, Brown, & Blanco for 2 to 5 more years. Most closer to 5 than 2. Werent not exactly dying for bodies in the rotation.

I agree, but I think Brantley will be able to hit .285 and draw walks until he's 40 years old. And that's a huge upgrade for us at this point.
