Nah. He committed 100 M in the offseason. His head got too damn big and he thought he knew better. He clearly did not.

Fired a competent GM just to give too much money for a reliever and a year too many for an aging 1B.

Just frustrating.
Try 3 years too many...

Did you honestly think Abreu was going to be this bad?

I keep seeing posts like this when people are pissed about signings. It doesn't matter what the fans think because fans aren't responsible for making these decisions. Fans aren't privy to a lot of information about players. Fans don't know what other options there truly were.

I loved the signing tho.

Abreu was a guy they desperately wanted when he was signing in 2013, but they couldn't work out a deal. This to me reeks of a "he was good back then and he's available now, lets go get him". His regression last year should have been a warning. I'm by no means a Yuli guy, but we could have done better than Abreu. We should have let someone else make that mistake.

But you had no idea he was going to be this bad. The use lost his power last year, but he still had an OPS of .824.

You are clearly Monday morning quarterbacking. There is absolutely no way you knew he was going to post a below .600 OPS thru June of this year.

I loved it too.

The point of my comment is on the surface is the original deal, the biggest issue was the third year. No one would fathom he'd post as below .600 OPS thru June this year.

What world do you live in where Dusty has only cost us 4 wins? Montero pitching in games he shouldn't have is more than 4 games. That doesn't include the other 10 with Mickey Mouse lineups he out together.

I just hope this game represents a pivotal shift in our energy as a team. Maybe it's time to lose a game like this and really light a fire under the team's ass thanks to Stanek's passion and a really painful loss.

Sometimes you need losses like this to wake everyone up. I'm trying to be optimistic because there's no reason we should be doing this badly so far. We're a much better team than what we're playing like recently.

We all loved the signing. What seems clear in hindsight with the info from the last month plus last season is he is not the same player they thought they were paying for.

Is he 40? Is he injured and won't admit it? Coming off some sort of enhancement? Whatever it is that swing is slow and his reaction time is even worse. And it's not going to get any better.

What if his bat speed dropped 20% the 2nd half. What if he was dealing with vision issues. What if he is actually older than he says. If I'm in charge of paying him 60M I find out as much as humanly possibly. I have an army of nerds that can project forward.

Maybe there were zero red flags and baseball is baseball. I can't accept it. But from our perspective we don't have the full picture.

I was hoping that would transpire in the top of the 9th, then I remembered we have Jose Abreu batting clean up

Seems like we have had a few of those this year.

Bullpen has regressed a bit, especially in June.

The team didn't really address a legit OF bat or has been unwilling to let Chas have it.

Bregman has picked it up, but you still have nothing from 1B and your best hitter is out like 4 more weeks.

I think the Astros are a better team than they are showing, but they have to have a lot of things correct soon.

You might be right. But I think 4 is pretty reasonable estimate for an average manager 76 games compared to the Dusty show. There have been about 8 games so far that I thought "that one's on the manager". The other losses--the pitching stunk, or hitting stunk, the other team pitched lights out, the other team crushed the ball--that's baseball, that happens. But there have been more than a reasonable amount of games that I said to myself "Why the f*** is he not pinch hitting here" or "Why is he putting _____ back out on the mound?".

I have always stated that managers get too much credit for wins and too much blame for losses. Dusty may have me rethinking that....
HarryRocket

That was, at best a subjective balk, maybe, maybe not, it's not clear. We have the benefit of slow moving pictures and it isn't crystal clear.

And you call that there? Wow.

Also, Stanek just showed more give a **** than anyone else this year. This team needs a correa type and a new manager.

This is where Maldy can prove worth because someone needs to lead this team, he's the only one I see capable of doing it.

Yep. With a purely league-average manager this team is still likely leading the division. If Bochy was managing the Astros, and Dusty the Rangers, we'd be leading by 7-8 games.

I agree with you. It's tough to say either way, but I still don't think anyone would have expected what has transpired. I think it's tough to say signing him at all was 100% a mistake at the time.

I will say I don't think Click would have made that deal with the 3rd year. Honestly, that's the real problem I have is firing your GM and then making two big deals, of which both aren't performing.

While it's not huge deal total money wise but making the decision the pass on a lot of LF and left handed options to settle on Brantley ended up being another HUGE mistake.

If I had told you after winning the World Series that on June 24th we'd be 6.5 games back in the division and only 5 games over .500 you would've thought it was impossible. But with Dusty Baker nothing is impossible, except for being a good manager

Terrible off season. Literally not one move has paid off. And it's not the moves just haven't gone well, it's all been disastrously bad. Brantley…. Abreau…. Montero…. Wow.

Lost 4 starting pitchers. 1 to free agency, 3 to injuries

Worst manager in league

Altuve and Alvarez in the lineup together for a total of 3 weeks?

And 1/2 game out do the wild card.

God bless Big Dck Dubon.

I don't put tonight on Dusty. Not much you can do when your two of your best RP give up 2+ runs each. You can complain about Madris but this team did score 7 runs. Because Diaz "gave up" 8 runs I do fully expect 7 straight starts at catcher from machete now though…..

Yup. We're on the same page. Lots of frustration and blame to throw around.

Even with it, we're not doomed just yet. Lots of baseball left. Dana has semi dealt with major problems at a trade deadline before. The Braves saved their season and won a title without Acuña by added a bunch of pieces (no stars).

4 may be an underestimate--I'm trying to be somewhat reasonable after watching that s***show.

For fun, what do you think the record would be if we required Dusty to make his decisions by consulting a Magic 8 Ball?

D- "Should I bat Abreau 4th today?"
8B- "My sources say no"

D-"Jose Abreau has walked 3 in a row, with non-competitive pitches. Pull him?"
8B- "Without a doubt"

D-"Will Julks have a good day defensively?"
8B-"Reply hazy, try again"

Do not disagree. Feels like priorities, if it were me around the trade deadline, would be LH bat, or at the very least a legit OF bat, and a reliever who can give the bullpen a little more length. If there is a legit 3 out there, ok with getting him too.
