It was simply the proper call. Really not much judgement, the BALL WAS THROWN OVER THE MIDDLE OF FIRST BASE. The runner does not have to run outside the line, He is on the line. No way this is interference.

What is the white line parallel to the foul line for? Is the runner not required to run between those two lines?

That is the running lane. You go in there you're safe from interference calls.
The best part about the running lane is that the rule says if the runner is outside of it he can be called out. It's all part of the ump's judgement. Also, the rule says b/c the base is outside of the running lane, the runner can be outside of it to step on the base.

Baseball is full of fun little things like that

Is this wrong?

https://baseballrulesacademy.com/the-nfhs-runners-lane-rule-umpires-guide/

The batter-runner is out when

(g) he runs outside the three-foot running lane (last half of the distance from home plate to first base) while the ball is being fielded or thrown to first base.

This infraction is ignored if it is to avoid a fielder who is attempting to field the batted ball or if the act does not interfere with a fielder or a throw.
The batter runner is considered outside the running lane lines if either foot is outside either line.

If the ball had hit Jake's helmet before the first baseman's glove, would that have been interference?
no

That's the HS rule book. This is what the MLB book says. It's a judgement call and the runner has the right to step on the base. Jake did nothing wrong.

Almost every runner touches first with their right foot. There is no way to stay in the lane and touch with the right foot. If you really have to stay in the lane all the way down then they need to add the orange safety bag.

First, zero chance that play is interference. He's stepping on the bag as he's hit. He has a right to get to the bag.

Next, Martinez is a whiney *****. Lol at the picture he printed out. Catcher didn't even have the ball at that point. Why not print where he was actually hit?

But finally, he's right the rule sucks. It's never applied consistently and honestly makes no sense. Just add a safety bag and be done with it. Zero reason not to.

So the rule says he has to keep both feet inside the running path unless he needs to step out immediately before touching the base. I just watched the replay and the camera doesn't switch to Jake until he's just a few feet from the back but his left foot was definitely coming down inside the foul line and it looked like his right foot did as well. I guess it's the ump's discretion on whether he interfered with the catch. Good it went our way.

All this has made me wonder why it's called the foul line. It's in fair territory, why isn't it called the fair line?

Abreu in the last 5 games has 5 xbh, 3 of which are homers, 10 hits and 10 rbi.

Crazily enough he's picked his rbi pace for 162 up to 85.

It was only a matter of time with Abreu. The dude is just too talented of a hitter for his April/May to be his new norm. Pulling yourself out of a slump at the plate is extremely difficult and I felt so bad for him. He's finally heating up at a time where we need him the most. That's good to see.

Once his confidence returns, and it probably already has, we're going to see a completely different Jose Abreu.

The Yainer Diaz we saw last night was both exciting and also an example of what the organization has been working so hard with him on behind the scenes. The dude has an unbelievable amount of pop in his bat... but the hitting coaches have been working tirelessly on his plate discipline and we saw him chase some pitches way out of the zone last night. Once he's able to cut back on those swings and dial in on pitches in the zone, he's going to go from a guy with tremendous potential to a truly elite hitter. It's just a matter of time. Habits are hard to break.

When his plate discipline approves and his game-calling and mechanics behind the plate improve.. he's going to be one of the best catchers in the league for a long time. It's going to be fun to watch.

If Yainer could make strides in his plate discipline, watch out. He'd go from good hitting catcher to just a damn good hitter. His ability to put the bat on the ball is strong. 61.4% Chase Contact%. Just look at the HR from last night.

He's a rookie, He's got some time to improve. A lot of guys see a jump from year 1 to 2. But even if he doesn't and he turns out to be another Javy Biaz type at the plate, its not the worst thing in the world.

Here's an excerpt from Dana Brown on Drew Gilbert's recent struggles in AA. He's in a 5-55 funk right now. This is what I was trying to get across to some of you who want Yordan to be a primary DH and not play in the field. It's extremely difficult:

Quote:

"I don't think its (his elbow injury) affected his swing because we wouldn't allow him to play if it was affecting (his) swing. I think it's more that sometimes when you're put in the game as a DH, it's tough to hit off the bench. It's a really difficult thing," Brown said. "That's a real thing. If you look across the league, your numbers sitting as a DH are not as good (as) when they're on the field. It's just the way it is. So we hope to get them out there sooner rather than later"
I'm not worried about Gilbert's struggles. He's a kid. There's going to be ups and downs. But my main point here is that there's a reason Yordan has been very vocal to the organization about his desire to be the primary left fielder. And the numbers show he hits much better when he plays in the field.

This is why guys who strictly played DH for most of their career (David Ortiz, Edgar Martinez) and continued to rake are so impressive to me. It's not as easy at it looks.

I've been looking forward to his regression toward the mean, especially now that he's just started pulling homers in MMP.

Not once has Brantley been mention with Bagwell so you can't retroactively add that on.

Bagwell was basically the acting GM when he was signed. He's also the guy who said Brantley would be back by opening day.

Regression just means movement toward the mean. It could be up or down.

No apologies to him. Keep in mind he was also lobbying for Ausmus to be the GM. He has good intentions, but he shouldn't have a seat at the decision table.

In this case, you can. In statistics, the regression refers to the deviation from the mean getting smaller. In other words, if you have observed an accurate and precise mean, then the further an observed data point is from that mean, the more likely the next one will be closer to the mean. Deviation is shrinking and 'regressing to the mean'.

A more accurate term is reversion to the mean, but you can regress to the mean whether you are above it or below it.

Most sports fans misapply the principle though, because we hardly ever have an accurate and precise mean from which to base these statements because variables change every game and every season.

I'm fascinated by this idea that being a DH somehow makes you hit worse. I know Yordan has some pretty different stats as a DH vs LF, but I am sure there are examples going the other way, too. I don't have the time to do a lot of digging, but Michael Brantley is basically the same hitter as DH vs LF, albeit in way way fewer ABs. David Ortiz also has a ton more ABs at DH than 1B, but he was better at DH. JD Martinez has similar numbers at DH as he does in LF, but better numbers in RF. Also, how many of the "worse" performing players at DH relative to their time in the field are b/c they started getting too old? Like Miguel Cabrera?

This is one of those immeasurable psychological things that will be different for everyone.

It's a matter of staying engaged throughout the game. Some are able to do it while sitting on the bench. Others aren't. It's definitely not the same for everyone- but I would argue a huge majority of guys would rather be in the field.
