I just saw the the starting pitchers for the Mets/Yankees tonight are Verlander and Cole. They've had opposite starts to the season.

I wonder if JV will regret going to the fish bowl of New York when the long knives come out? Of course the Mets don't get near the scrutiny the Yankees do but Cohen has become like Steinbrenner, at least in terms of throwing money around, and with that comes a lot of criticism.

I think he's probably as upset with himself as he the fans are with him.

The good news for JV is that the Mets have been a dumpster fire all around. After throwing all that money around they're under .500, 9.5 GB of the division, and 4 GB of the WC.

So luckily for JV they won't be after just him with their pitchforks. Plus he's swimming in his money a la Scrooge McDuck. He'll be fine

Speaking of yucky starts to the 2023 season, Wilson Contreras. Glad the Cardinals outbid us. We dodged a bullet I think.

Checking again. Anyone looking to sell?

He'll bounce back. He's got an enormous gap between expected vs actual.

With the flashes Yainer has shown, I am glad we didn't spend money on any catchers.

Yea. It was a bit of a head scratcher that we'd consider committing $20 million to Contreras before finding out what we've got with Diaz.

Not sure if it's been discussed around here but Dusty should find more ABs for Diaz.

With the way Dusty has played Machete every game I'm glad we didn't waste any money on players with catching gear who would sit around and mope.

Taking a stab at tonight's lineup with a RHP on the mound. 2 variables I can't really know - 1) will Pena be back? If he is, 2) will Altuve have the day off? Gonna assume yes to 1 and no to 2.

Altuve
Pena
Bregman
Tucker
Abreu
Diaz (DH)
Julks
Meyers
Maldy

There were some serious concerns about Yanier's work ethic and ability to be a big league catcher. The talent was there, but he never seemed interested in putting in the work during his time in the minors. That's why the front office wasn't banking on him being the catcher long term. And frankly, that's why Cleveland sort of gave up on him.

Something clicked over the offseason and he's been working his ass off. He's going to be the guy.

When Yordan does return, he needs to be the all time DH. Zero reason to put him in the field

So let's start looking at who we target (to trade for). Framber-Javier-Brown is a very nice 1-2-3, but I would love to have another one in the mix for the postseason rotation and move Brown to 4.

I used to think the same due to his knees. I double any OF work affected the oblique. That sounds like a swing issue.

First of all Dusty will never do that plus Yordan actually bats better than his normal Superman self when he plays the field. If I were manager I'd play him in at MMP almost all the time because that's about the easiest LF in the majors and I'd use him more as a DH on the road but it's Dusty so WTF knows.

That's been my perception. He communicates with the pitchers and takes control behind the plate way better than I was expecting.

In fairness, his numbers at the plate are a lot better when he plays in the field. That's actually a common thing for a lot of guys. They stay more engaged. He also hurt himself swinging during batting practice. His legs (which was the primary concern when he starting playing LF more often) have held up great so far.

Chas's team rankings:

wOBA - 4th
ISO - 2nd
wRC+ - 4th
HR/flyball - 3rd
WPA - 3rd
PA - 10th

*note - Altuve still hasn't cracked 80 PA yet, but I included him anyway

Only issue is a lot of those guys are on teams who will be in the playoff hunt.

More than we would be willing to give up. I saw the reports that we've been linked to him, but I don't buy it. His name hasn't been mentioned to me.

I would keep an eye on middle of the rotation guys like Drew Smyly, Eduardo Rodriguez (when/if healthy), Aaron Civale, etc.

Yea, Cleveland will probably ask a ton. They're under no pressure to deal him given that they're very much in the division hunt.

I'd be willing to move a couple top 5 prospects not named Gilbert, but doubt that would be enough.

Another thing to keep in mind as we get closer to the deadline is the expanded playoff. More teams are in the playoff race now so more teams will be hesitant to sell- especially those teams that are kind of stuck in the middle.

Except Yordan in the field is a very different hitter than Yordan sitting on the bench. He's good as a DH. He's an MVP while playing in the field. And the sample sizes are plenty big enough to see it.

Given his injury history with his legs, I think we can manage him being a DH for the last 60 games.

I'm just saying I think it would ease him back into full health.

They're going to keep him in the field. His legs are healthier than they've ever been in his career and he's been outspoken behind the scenes about wanting to be in the field.
