I wish I could post a Venn Diagram where people who were alive to see it and people who point to batting average as their go-to indicator of success at the plate align perfectly

Seriously, I am a much bigger fan of OPS than AVG although I will always have a heart for pure hitters like Ichiro, Gwynn, and Boggs. It's also the reason I've liked watching Uncle Mike for a couple of years.

I will say that I think the writer's analysis may be off just a bit because of the DH expansion... or maybe it's just coincidence that the three players listed this year are from the NL. Not having to account for a pitcher in the lineup can certainly allow more leeway for the big whiffers. Just a thought.

I love Texas Aggie sports, but I love Texas A&M more.

the Rangers lead MLB in runs scored. The Rangers also have the highest team batting average in MLB.

the Tigers have the fewest runs scored. The Tigers rank 29th in team batting avearge

the Astros rank 15th in runs scored. The Astros rank 17th in team batting average

Dubon is better vs lefties too. Yainer is there. No random bottom-of-the-lineup guy in the 2 hole. One of Dusty's better lineups all things considered.

Getting hits matters, of course. Hits alone do not tell the whole story.

WSH is 6th in BA & 24th in Runs.
PHI is 8th in BA & 19th in Runs.
MIA is 9th in BA & 25th in Runs
LAD is 19th in BA & 3rd in Runs

Something like wOBA (factors in walks, HBP, extra bases) is a much better single stat indicator of offense. The standard deviation of the team ranking of Runs-AVG vs Runs-wOBA is 6.9 vs 4.4.

Looking at the key upcoming series later in the month, if no one gets skipped & no more 6-man then we have Bielak-Brown-Valdez for LA & Brown-Valdez-Javier-France for Arlington. That sets up nicely.
