Since Tucker wants to be a free agent in a few years, I wonder what it would take to move him in a trade, if he's even a potential option at this point.

There are levels to this game. You can't trade a guy like TED unless you're the Rays and constantly playing the low budget game and not ever going all in.
I was just thinking hypothetically in case the haul we could potentially get for him would too much to pass on, and if he could be reasonably replaced in the aggregate.

I am taking your comment to mean it would look bad for the Astros to the rest of the league and future targets if that deal was made. Thing is, the Astros are already known for not giving big free agent deals often.

For me it would have to be one solid prospect per year of service of Tucker, so 2.5 prospects we really like. Hell we got Diaz and Maton for 4.5 years of Straw, Tucker commands much more than that for 2.5 years IMO.

But I don't hate the idea of parting ways now if we get a good return since we have a bit of a logjam in outfield. I don't want rentals, I want an increasing window for Espada to work with

It would signal to the fans and rest of baseball that they were not serious about winning this season. It would be awfully silly to waste a season of prime Altuve, Alvarez, Bregman, Framber, & Javier.

Meanwhile most of those fans would probably trade him for an Ohtani rental.

So... you're good with trading a guy who can help us win a championship now for... lottery tickets?

Ill be honest, in a sign in trade type scenario id be willing to entertain it. but the trade cant contain Gilbert

Nope, but I would expect a nice haul if we did, and not rentals. It is apparent we aren't going to be able to extend him beyond 2025 and if we choose to capitalize on his value at some point to go all in on Gilbert as his replacement then it wouldn't break my heart.

My preference would be Tucker through 25 and Gilbert through 2030 (assuming Gilbert comes up next year for some limited use.

FWIW- I've been told there's a "probably less than 1% chance" Tucker re-signs with Houston

Dang. I figured it was low, but that's brutal.

It will be interesting to see whether we trade him next year, in 2025, or let him walk and get nothing for him. There are probably a hundred different variables involved, but interesting nonetheless.

I wonder how much of his brother's experience in Houston factors into that. *(if it does at all)*

I think it was more how long he got stuck behind Reddick and others. His time under team control was extended at minimum one year, and in his mind probably 2 years from when he thought he was ready. That is a lot of money left on the table that probably irritates him.

Our wide-ass open window is going to be challenged in the next 2-3 seasons. In '23, '24, or '25 the following will become FA unless extended. Altuve, Bregman, Pressly, Abreu, Montero, Maldonado, Stanek, Maton, Valdez, Tucker, Urquidy, & Taylor. I think sending out any major big leaguer that could help us win a title in the 2-3 year window would be a terrible idea.

After this window, the team is going to look very different. Much like 17 and 23 looked very different. We will still have the following in '26 with some being here even longer. Alvarez, McCullers, Javier, Dubon, Garcia, Abreu, Pena, Meyers, Martinez, Brown, & Diaz.

I never understood why Preston didn't get a longer look. It seems he was treated the same way Jake and Chas are looked at right now.

He's butt hurt because his brother got DFA'd from the 40 man roster after it was clear he wasn't a major league talent. That's pretty dumb to be upset at the Astros over that.

Yep. Brother had a career WAR of -1.0, and didn't cut it for any other teams, either

I did not have Tucker trade talk or Corey Julks All Star talk in mid June on my 2023 Astros bingo card.

Anything to break up the incessant potbanging just 7 months after winning a title when most swore we'd never win another.

If Kyle Tucker was on another team, we'd be saying "wow, that's the perfect guy to trade for" given his production profile and controllability through 2025

I've no doubt missed alot of Bellinger discussion over the first few months, so I ask this question humbly... are we sure that his form is back and that he's a no-brainer upgrade over Dubon/Chas/Jake?

Robbie Grossman being the 3rd DH in voting is more comical than Julks being 4th

If nothing else he is another LH bat on the team which we really need if Brantley isn't expected back.

I wouldn't insert him in CF and play him there everyday. He's a lefty bat who can play OF and INF(1st). He's be an ideal platoon with Abreu or Chas/Jake vs RHP.

Edit- I'm slow.
