Someone will have to explain to me why Bregman should be benched yet Dubon is a must start.

As he heating up, going into today he had a 1.1XX OPS over the last week. His expected #s show he's due to get hot (as he is) and his floor is high because he gets on base even when slumping.

I havent been on the thread as much this week but are people actually saying Bregman needs to be benched?

No - just a poster here and there. All the clans are united in our hatred of Abreu and Dubon being benched right now.

I think the problem in dealing with Abreu is how much Crane has invested in him, not just money but his reputation. He didn't think he needed to hire a GM going into this past off season and Abreu was his big FA signing.

Our best hope - a high pop fly down the first base line where Abreu and Maldy collide giving them both non-life threatening injuries but keeps them on the bench for the next three months or so.

A new TexAgs low for the Astros thread, wishing injuries on our own team. That's Torbush wow right there!

I don't believe it's appropriate to wish injury or your rivals but to even joke about your own team…

How far into the season do we have with Abreu and Bregman with a batting average close to .200 before we just shut them down? Surely Yainer and Dubon will provide more production than those two.

Maybe I've had too many bourbons. Just moved down. Not benched.

Regardless, here is the Farmer plan.

Altuve, Bregman, Alvarez, & Tucker bat top 4. Figure out the order. It's doesn't matter that much. (Tucker, Altuve, Alvarez, Bregman would probably be my pick).

If there is a lefty starting, (2/3 or all 3) McCormick, Meyers, and Dubon need to be in the lineup. And Pena can't be benched to get Dubon in.

Diaz has to play more. Get him a guaranteed start behind the dish behind the plate at least once a week (I would do 2 or 3) then he also needs a start at 1st or DH once a week as well.

Don't give up on Abreu. But he needs to be down in the order, especially vs LHP when we have so many killers. We need him good to help win a title.

Chas & Jake start in the OF when Javier or any fly ball pitcher pitches. Pena starts all Framber, McCullers, & Brown starts.

All gets get regulars rest, Dubon is the first guy off the bench.

I think that is all that comes to mind.

after reading this post, I think you've had too many bourbons, too. and not b/c of your lineup talk

also for 15 Milly, or whatever, you kind of can't give up on Abreu, yet. He definitely needs to drop in the lineup

Maybe you're right. But having two underperforming guys sit on the bench for the summer while they draw their millions in salary while a couple of young guys get a chance doesn't seem like such a terrible thing to me.

To me I could care less if Abreu hits a HR or not. But if he doesn't, he needs to be hitting close to .300, still driving in runs and getting on base at least

another nice thing about the Astros' current winning streak...

it's created separation from the Angels (4 games back) and Mariners (5 games back)
Farmer1906

Agreed. Rangers are playing well, but the Mariners have the second best roster. I'd love as much breathing room with them in case something terrible happens.

tip of the cap to the Brewers...

they are giving the Astros a Noon start time for Wednesday's getaway game.

even though the 'stros are off on Thursday.

the team will have a full free day in Oakland, California...for what that's worth

That's not entirely a fair comparison. Albert was getting special balls and using a bat that he and he alone was allowed to use.

Jose is just a naturally aging 40 year old.

It's not a level playing field.

I think there's something seriously wrong with McCullers that can't be rehabbed or fixed at this point.

I guess the best we can count on is 1-2 months per year while the rest of the year he recovers just enough to throw his arm out again

I didn't get a chance to comment at the time, but before today's game someone posted an article from like 2018 (maybe 2008?) about the worst clean-up hitters in baseball. The worst person on that list had an OPS+ like 20-ish points higher than Abreu's is right now.

Consider this: In 2018 Chris Davis started his slide into terrible, he slashed .168/.243/.296, and hit 16 home runs in 128 games. That's once every 8 games.

Abreu is slashing .215/.278/.256, and has yet to homer in 45 games. He's on pace to play 158

So fun hypothetical and relevant to our upcoming series…

If the brewers appear to be sellers at the deadline, is Corbin Burnes a guy we go after, assuming we still have issues at SP?

Who would be a person we would target that's a likely option?

Again this is a hypothetical…

Yeah mild forearm strain my ass.

Well, I said "ASB" a month ago so I guess I can't be shocked by this.

And I really feel for Lance. He seems to care for the city and club and just cannot get healthy.

ETA apparently I mistyped MILD and the last letter was F instead of D. That's a neat little typo

Burnes would be very expensive since he would be under club control thru the 2024 season

the Astros will see him Monday night

Yes but given his off-season issues with the front office around his arbitration, you'd think they might be more inclined to move him now. Maybe not though…

Ok, now I'm going to do the optimistic Abreu post.

With Runners in scoring position, Jose is batting .234/.321/.340 with 16 RBI in 47 ABs. That's not that bad. Obviously we'd like a little more XBH
When he swings at the first pitch he's .278/.297/.333.

In the last 6 games he's 4-18 (.222), has 5 BBs, 3 RBI and 3 Runs scored.

maybe it's a positive trend we're seeing?

Nothing about those stats makes me feel comfortable. Hell, I am not sure you couldn't replace with Maldy/Julks' (maybe less the walks) and maybe Diaz's stats and get similar numbers.

I'm trying to find something positive.

Here's another piece to chew on. Abreu is hitting .196 vs 4 seam fastball, but his expected average is .232, xwOBA .330, and hard hit % is 41.2. Maybe he's been a bit unlucky?

I'm with you. I attended my first game in 1977. When Chili's Carillon opened and it was the hot place to be my neighbor was the GM. He'd call my folks when the team was hanging out there and we'd go and I met and played Pac-Man with a lot of them. That was 1980-81. I still remember hiding behind my dad when I met Joe Sambito since he was my favorite Astro at the time.

All that said, the manager bashing is just over the top. That's the last I'll say about it because apparently that's what everyone wants to do now.

I rarely make any comments on here about baker and while its sometimes over the top…so is the collective groups of posters who complain about the complainers. They bleed about the bleeders constantly and are too self absorbed to realize they are literally doing the same thing but think they are somehow fighting the good fight by counterbalancing the negativity. I'm not saying you specifically I'm just saying in general

It's a message board and both groups can be equally annoying but think it's the "other guys" that are the bigger issue

To be fair, the pot banger's posts out number they "ok, we get it, that's enough" about 10 to 1, and that's not an over exaggeration. Count them yourself.

So, objectively speaking, one side is clearly the bigger issue.

The thing is, I don't think a single poster thinks Abreu hitting 4th right now is ideal. I think most of us know that Dusty is sticking with him because he feels his best chance to "get it going" is to show faith in him. Dusty tends to give guys with a lot of pelts on the wall plenty of leash, but he will make a move eventually if Abreu never figures it out.

That's about the long and short of it.

Exactly.

Winning now is making the leash longer. Iota a king season, it's not hurting the team at this point. At some point, if Abreu doe not turn it around, a change will have to be made if team wants to win WS.
