Really need *checks notes* J.P. France to turn in some decent starts over the next month and for McCullers to get over his annual injury problem.

Don't get trying to knock the front office for this, just lost two rotation stalwarts. That's going to be a significant problem for any team.

I want to see us sign a starter to fill the Garcia and Lance (unknown) gap, but overall I'm not worried. Javier and Framber are the 1-2 punch. Brown is going to get better and better. If one of Urquidy, Lance, France, etc. step up and fill that 4th spot it will be gravy.
4 spots is playoff time, but to keep our guys fresh we really need a 5 man rotation minimum during the regular season. Otherwise our aces will be worn down.
Urquidy is the perfect regular season starter who becomes a relief option in the post season. Hope he bounced back to his normal, reliable self.
We do need one more playoff quality arm - either LMJ, or one of these young guys step up, or we go get one at the trade deadline.

Astros don't have a lot of prospects to trade. Gonna be tough.

Are you saying LMJ isn't a playoff arm or he won't be healthy for the playoffs? He's been a quality playoff arm in 15, 17, 18, 20, 21, & 22.
I guess I'm saying it either had to be healthy him or a trade. It can't be Urquidy even if he's healthy.

It's one thing to pass on JV but this was a real possibility that someone gets injured. Urquidy should be the insurance pitcher, not part of the starting 5

Yes, can never have too much pitching.
It's all but obvious LMJ will never last an entire season so I would've never included him in the starting five mentality going into the spring. Anything you get from him these days should be considered gravy on top.
Pitchers get hurt every year. When was the last time a starting rotation went an entire year without someone going on the IL? Prolly never.
Hence why I was banging the drum before the year started to get Bauer. This team needs another proven arm. Hopefully Brown can make a move soon for someone.
Kind of an off the wall idea, but what about Abreu? If I remember correctly he was a starting pitcher before we turned him into a reliever.
I think the kid is our future lights out closer, but for right now with Neris, Montero, Pressly and Maton, we have a pretty stocked bullpen.

Bauer returning to MLB to pitch for the Astros almost makes too much sense. Not that I'm in favor of it or anything.

MLB teams have a public exposure. It's considered family entertainment and they need people and families going to games and buying hot dogs, cokes, beers, shirts, hats, ice cream nachos and god knows what else. They don't need the bad PR of a guy whose private live of liking to beat up women for jollies has now been exposed very publicly. They certainly don't need women's groups calling them out on it or it being the headline in the news.

I do think we needed an insurance signing and the "7th" starter someone who could dual role SP or relief duties, which seems like Urquidy could.
We lost JV and didn't replace him. Maybe the team is confident in their minor league talent, but beyond Brown that came up already recently, I'm not. We'll see.
I disagree on not wanting Urquidy to pitch in the postseason. I'd like other options first because he is either really good or really bad. When he's good in the postseason, his ERA had been about 3. When he's bad, he gets lit up.

It's true that if many of these guys' private lives came to light, MLB would be blackballing a good amount of them (and conversely, that if Bauer's stuff had been kept out of the press, he'd still be a Dodger even if the entire organization knew he was a scumbag with women). Bauer's deal is, like MG said, 100% about how his signing would affect the public view of that organization. not whether what he did was illegal or whether he'd be the only scumbag on the team (Because he wouldn't be. On ANY pro team).
If you're looking to pro sports for your heroes, you're looking in the wrong place. The Altuves of the world are few and far between…and ironically he has spent years now getting booed!
