It was Houston's second straight shutout vs. Tampa Bay as Brown followed in the footsteps of Luis Garcia's gem on Tuesday. The last time the Astros pitched back-to-back shutouts? It occurred at Tropicana Field against the Rays in September 202

Oof

Man September 202 was a long ass time ago.

Two thousand years of beautiful tradition, from Moses to Sandy Koufax YOU'RE ******* RIGHT I'M LIVING IN THE F***ING PAST!

I cannot say enough about how dominant the pitching was in 2 shutouts, with a total of 7 hits in 18 innings

Garcia gave us 6 innings
Hunter gave us 7 innings
We got single shutout innings from Neris, Maton, Montero, and we got the closing inning twice from Presley

In neither game did any Astros pitcher give up two hits in the same inning.

That's the pitching that won us the title last year and that's the pitching we all hoped we were bringing back

And to a team that just set an mlb record by hitting at least one home run in each of its first 21 games.

So looking back at the slow start and struggling to get above .500 what a lot of us forget is how my much extra baseball our guys play every season. It's not just one short offseason.

Thinking back Bergman hasn't had a full off-season since he became a big leaguer.

When you think about it makes a little sense that everyone ends their season a month earlier than us and it takes month longer than other to get ramped up.

This is real. It's the MLB version of what the Spurs went through for about 16 years.

I'm posting this without having read the thread during the game, so SIAP. I just got home from my sons 11u games tonight and I only recorded the Astros Postgame. Obviously Hunter Brown was amazing as well as the bullpen, but it seemed like 90% of the outs were good to incredible plays by Peña at SS. I was amazed at (1) how many balls were hit to SS and (2) how easy he made all of the plays look. Maybe I haven't been paying enough attention lately, but man, J Peña looked incredible fielding the position.

Think of the opportunities without a black hole at catcher

Just because I found this funny this morning. New Era put a stop to the Braves home run celebration because they are "the on field cap partner" for MLB. I am all about protecting your brand and contracts that you have but this is petty and just flat out dumb on their part.

If they were smart they would make one for the team and then sell on to the fans. But nope, just going to end the fun.

Braves End Hat Celebration

Quote:

The Atlanta Braves will be looking for a new home run celebration for the rest of the season.

The team confirmed to Channel 2s Alison Mastrangelo that players have been told they can no longer wear the "Big Hat" that cameras and fans have spotted in the dugout.

The owner tweeted Tuesday night that New Era Cap Company reported the hat celebration to Major League Baseball. New Era is the official on-field cap partner of MLB.

Logic, we don't allow that when making decisions in baseball.

In the presser Dusty complimented Diaz on how great a game he called so I'm sure that means more opportunities with other....ha ha ha, I can't even finish the sentence. It's Dusty, we will get Maldy and kindly stfu about it because he knows best.

Normally I'm not one the complain about who Dusty writes down on the lineup card but considering how superstitious he tends to be you would think he would test this streak to its fullest extent.

I don't remember seeing this last weekend. Maybe they were only wearing it while winning.

I think props for celebrations are kind of "meh" but how ridiculous is that? I guess New Era needs to make a giant oversized cap for it. Seems like a much better way to fix the problem without looking like the bad guy to fans.

Couple things I know (which obviously can change, but this is what I've heard):

- Diaz will be getting more playing time soon. Patience for Maldy is starting to run out.

- Nobody is worried about Jose Abreu. They knew he was a slow starter when they signed him and there's no concern...yet.

- Drew Gilbert won't be in Asheville much longer. I give it until mid-May. Maybe sooner. They do want to see his strikeout rate go down, but it's a small sample and not necessarily a concern.

- Speaking of prospects, keep an eye on Ryan Clifford. They are in love with this kid.

Diaz smacked 2 balls over 100 MPH last night. I checked to see how his batted ball #s compare to other catchers.

Of the 45 catchers with at least 20 batted balls this season Yainer ranks:
  • 10th in EV - 91.2
  • 14th in Max EV - 109.3
  • 12th in Avg Distance - 177
  • 15th in HH% - 43.5%
  • 17th in Barrel% - 6.1%

Obviously, his outcomes are not matching the quality of contact yet but you can see the potential to have a top-10 hitting catcher. And for some reference what a top 10 catcher looks like - from 2021-23 (min 600 PA) the 10th best-hitting catcher is Travis d'Arnaud with a 105 wRC+ and slash line of .255/.308/.442/.750. Maldonado is 2nd to last on this list with a slash line of .176/.258/.317/.575. Only Austin Hedges was worse.

Regarding the first point, unless you are
Dusty how can you be so sure? I believe that when I see it with Dusty

Any plans to play him more at first or do they see him as an outfielder?

I actually haven't been told anything about that, so I don't want to speculate. I'm sure they'll give him reps.
