They only sell out when the Yankees or Red Sox visit…it's beyond pathetic.

Makes sense. No one that lives in Tampa is from Tampa.

I go to Tampa once a year on a golf trip and have only met people from the northeast that live there

Yes living in New England, everyone that re locates from here goes to…Tampa. It's depressing. I've tried to tell them there are other places that are warm too.

They need to move the stadium to Tampa. Both the Bucs and the Lightening have great attendance. This is purely an issue of a terrible stadium in a geographically undesirable area. It would be like putting Minute Maid in Baytown and then wondering why attendance was down.

But the current Rays proposal is to build a $1bn stadium right next to the Trop. It's ludicrous. People from Tampa don't want to drive to St. Pete and fight one bridge over the Bay to get there.

here are the Machete stats for this morning.

63 plate appearances...4 runs scored...3 RBI

has not scored a run or driven in a run since his solo homer on April 14th

Oof. I don't care what the metrics say about his defense. He is bringing nothing to the plate, and his defense has regressed per the eye test.

But the bottom line is we all know all this and it won't change anything.

He'll continue to get the lion's share of work and we'll just have to suffer through this for an entire 162+

He's batting .143 and rarely even has a productive AB. Just makes no sense why Diaz hasn't been given more of opportunity as the every day C.

Good to hear but he's not even in AA yet.

Obviously Brown's comments are for Gilbert only. Because if Diaz is moving too quickly I'd hate to see what too slow is.

He's got Diaz on the roster. He's not the one making the call who sees the field.

It's like when Click had to trade Straw just to get Chas & Meyers on the field.

Because Dusty believes in what Maldy brings behind the plate and I'm not talking about throwing out runners but calling the right pitch, anticipating what a hitter is looking for in certain situations, and basically being a sherpa for the pitchers.

Now if the above is a skillset that only Maldy possesses and can't be taught to the other catchers so be it. However, I'd like to see how some of our aces pitch without him. If they suddenly are getting rocked go back to the way it was. I have a feeling our pitchers will do just fine, maybe lose a little with some key insight Maldy would bring, but if the replacement catcher could just hit his weight I bet it would be worth it.

Also, there is nothing preventing Maldy from providing guidance to the backup catcher and pitcher during the other halves of innings so he could still provide insights without eating 4 at bats each game and killing potential rallies.

Here's a fun little nugget. Kenni Gomez is a name that's been mentioned to me a couple times as someone the organization is extremely high on. They view him as possibly the most talented player in the farm system. He's only 17 years old but they are in love with everything about him. Five tool player from Cuba.

He's going to be a really hot name in a couple years.

Article on the signing

https://climbingtalshill.com/2021/08/26/astros-favorites-sign-1-top-50-international-prospect/

Quote:

Although the Astros' farm system has been ranked near the bottom in MLB, they are favorites for one Top 50 international prospect.

In MLB Pipeline's latest Top 50 international prospect rankings, the Houston Astros were linked to only one prospect: Kenny Gomez, an outfielder from San Cristobal, Dominican Republic. The organization has been identified as the most active in Cuba in regard to scouting, but none of the recent verbal agreements or signings made the Top 50.

Gomez is a left-handed hitter with 55 hit and 55 power on an 80-grade scale. The lefty has been identified as a power hitter, who can spray the field and study the zone. While also knowledgeable in the box, Gomez has "the potential to be a plus hitter with solid average power."

The 16-year-old mainly plays centerfield, where he has displayed a 50 arm and 50 field. The right-hander's accuracy could keep him in center, as he is also average in speed (50) at a young age.

While Gomez drives the ball to the opposite field consistently, the left-hander doesn't swing and miss much either. His plate approach could be compared to Tony Gwynn with his discipline and spray, but Gomez has much a wider stance that sits heavily on his back foot.

The lefty also trains with Jaime Ramos, a member of MLB's Trainer Partnership Program, at the Jaime Ramos Baseball Academy. While the Astros are favorites to sign Gomez, a signing bonus hasn't been reported yet with the new international signing period opening on January 15, 2022.

Currently ranked 17th on the the Astros top 30:

Quote:

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 45 | Run: 60 | Arm: 45 | Field: 55 | Overall: 40

The Astros are more active in the Cuban market than most clubs and mined it for three players in the 2022 international class: shortstop Alberto Hernandez ($950,000), Gomez ($775,000) and right-hander Carlos Espinosa ($480,000). Gomez made an immediate impression with his advanced offensive and defensive skills. He batted .294/.402/.500 with 10 steals in 37 games during his pro debut in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League.

Gomez prioritizes making contact at the plate with a disciplined approach and a left-handed swing that stays in the zone for a long time. Though he's a hit-over-power guy, he does have the bat speed and projectable strength in his compact 5-foot-11 frame to grow into 15-20 homer pop. He showed the aptitude to turn on pitches and drive them in the air against DSL competition.

Gomez's plus speed will enable him to steal bases and remain in center field. He stands out with his instincts as well as his quickness in the outfield, making quality reads and taking efficient routes. He has fringy arm strength but it's playable in center.

Dusty's incredibly slow integration of young players would have fit perfectly with Tim Pupura's philosophy. And that's about all I have to say about that.

OFFENSE
BA: .254 - 9th
OBP: .330 - 11th
SLG: .392 - 17th
wOBA: .320 - 16th
wRC+: 104 - 14th
K%: 21.5% - 11th
BB%: 9.0% - 17th
R: 121 - 7th
HR: 24 - 20th

WHIP: 1.23 - 8th
K%: 26.0% - 3rd
BB%: 7.9% - 5th

Offense is kind of average. It makes some sense without Altuve & Brantley, but also McCormick & Alvarez missing time.

Pitching is elite again. I didn't realize just how good they have been.

So I haven't been hearing much about the Yankees so I looked.

They're 13-11 just like us but they're 7 GB in the AL East and with how strong TB, TOR, and even BAL (probably not sustainable) any bad stretch and they could find themselves in a decent hole they'll have to climb out of.

Apparently it wasn't bad enough for him to leave the game. He's DHing today and wakes his next AB.

Bad slide but it is the top of the 2nd and that infield looks wet/damp still so it looks he just stuck instead of slid.

Walk off home run Cincy. Chance to get to within 0.5 GB tonight, and the Rangers start a series with New York this weekend.

So essentially we'll be tied or damn close to it with the HOT, 1ST place Rangers by the end of April. Should be an interesting next FIVE months of the season.
