If I had to guess, I think the move might have been because of Urshela being out for the year.

Yep, France has shown to be a viable back-end of the rotation pitcher so far.

Of the 27 catchers that have logged at least 150 plate appearances this year, here is where Maldy ranks according to fangraphs:

dWAR- 24th
oWAR- 27th

There simply is no defense for him playing any appreciable time at this point in his career for the Astros.

Salvy Perez is about the same defensively (-2.2 dWAR vs Maldy's -2.7), but what a shot in the offensive arm he could bring. KC isn't going anywhere and is starting to see that young talent mature. Might not be a huge ask in terms of return. Worth kicking the tires and keep Diaz at first or DH.
