There are multiple bands to the UCL. Depends on which band and the severity of the sprain. Anterior band being the most important.

It's like aathletes playing on a small sprain in their ankle if it involves only anterior talofibular ligament.

Or, the Blue Jays could have just had the 3b be somewhere relatively close to the bag.
