Gilbert shut us down for 7 because we started the game so inpatient

I guess the good news is Machete and Montero get some credit for this being just a 2 run game going into the last 6 outs. We have a chance to steal this one in spite of 7 bad innings of offense.

Gilbert has a 0.98 WHIP, walked 19 in 107 innings and has a 67% strike rate. He's just a damn good pitcher, guys.

By not working counts they don't tire a pitcher out in an inning where the pitch clock can matter and work in their favor.

By not working counts they give themselves no chance at a BB and a baserunner. A baserunner that forces the opposing pitcher to change his own rhythm. A baserunner that can move and possibly steal a base.

By not working counts they give their own pitchers no rest time.

It's an asinine strategy.

I understand the benefit of working counts. But if they pound the strike zone early as they have and we get behind it'll fail all the same.

Maldy has the 2nd worst framing of all catchers in the league (backup or starter). Also bottom 5% in caught stealing %.

In other words: he's one of the worst defensive catchers in the entire league and already the worst offensive catcher

Which is also why it doesn't make sense to watch a bunch of pitches. Same with Kirby in GM 1.

Sometimes it's a better approach to swing early and often.
