I found this neat photo someone posted on the Aggies off season thread of Bill Virdon and Tom Chandler at Olsen.

My memory of the year that game was played was off a year. It was in 1978, Olsen's first year. I guess I was a junior.

If Bagwell had juiced, and that kept his right shoulder strong so he could have kept playing as long as he wanted, how many home runs would he have ended up with? At least 550 maybe?

I think you have that backwards. His body broke down because he juiced.

I'm not sure that the order. I think the juice (specifically HGH) was covering for and masking the arthritic shoulder and it was never correctly dealt with. And when he stopped using that the issues manifested fast and furious.

Like Mordo says at the end of Dr Strange, "The bill comes due. The bill always comes due."

Petitte claimed that HGH was the real thing everyone was using. It was keeping everyone uber healthy. Pitchers on 4 days rest and hitters playing every day, all without the day to day nagging injuries.

Either way, whatever order and whatever substance; McInnis said if he used it

You'll never convince me he and Biggio didn't. Caveat is, I don't give a damn. They all did it so it wasn't even really an unfair advantage.

Bagwell? I've never heard that before and it must not be common knowledge or he wouldn't be in the HOF.

I hate bad mouthing any of our players who contributed so much, but the last few years of Bagwell's career definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. In as stretch from 94-99, he was as great as any 1B who has ever lived, with '95 being the only "off year" in there. He was walking more than he struck out, stealing bases, just a manager's dream.

2000 was his best power year - he led the league with 152 runs scored, hit 47 HR, drove in 13 and hit .310, but there were trends that moved the stick the other way that told you "this guy is getting older and doesn't care about altering his game." In that giant year of 2000 he walked 42 fewer times, his steals went from 30 to 9 and his OBP dropped 30 points.

He still had three more 30 HR years and drove in 130 runs in 2001, but the rest of the numbers just kept sliding. He never drew more walks than strikeouts again, his averaged dropped under .300, never to return, from 2000-2003 his OPS went from 1.039 to .966 to .919 to .897.

And watching at home you kept seeing him get into that damn deep crouch and get around on the ball less and less.

Meanwhile Bidge made the change to his game when he lost his greatest weapon, his speed. He figured out how to use the Crawford Boxes, kept adding armor to his outfit to get hit by pitches without dying, and piled on run totals of 102, 100, and 94 in his age 37-39 seasons He had hit a career-high 22 homers twice in the 90s, then hit 24 in 2004, 2006 in 2005 and 21 in 2006 when he was 40. And he figured it out in the post-season at the end. Hit .400 vs the Braces in the 2004 NLDS, .316 vs them in the 2005 NLDS, and .333 against the Cardinals in the 2005 NLCS.

Love all the stuff Baggy did as an Astro, but his stubborness to not adjust really was frustrating to watch.

I'm not trying to disrespect Bagwell. But I'm not trying to be ignore his size and what was going on in the game at that time. He's very likely the greatest hitter in Astros history (Yordan may have something to say about that). I love the player. Glad he made the HOF. Annoyed it took so long. Glad he's apart of the team still. Stay the **** away from making decisions tho.

I'll say it - not a fan of WBC. Does anyone remember - or care - who has won in the past? Time away from the MLB roster when decisions are being made, time to reconnect with the team and get ready for the season that really matters. More ABs for some players while others are away? That's what split squad games are for. Risk of injury during WBC games > than spring games where everyone is watching pitch counts, not running all out, getting gradually worked into playing condition. Save this for the Olympics.
Farmer1906
How long do you want to ignore this user?

In the practical sense, I agree. It does not help the individual team and introduces extra injury risk.

But I have a hard time believing any diehard baseball fan isn't going to be into the WBC at least some. Seeing guys play for their country is fantastic. Creating these super teams is incredible.

Baseball in the Olympics has pretty much gone away. They brought it back for Tokoyo, but here is the roster USA used.

United States
  • Shane Baz
  • Anthony Carter
  • Brandon Dickson
  • Anthony Gose
  • Edwin Jackson
  • Scott Kazmir

  • Scott McGough
  • David Robertson
  • Joe Ryan
  • Ryder Ryan
  • Simeon Woods Richardson
  • Tim Federowicz
  • Mark Kolozsvary
  • Nick Allen
  • Eddy Alvarez
  • Triston Casas
  • Todd Frazier
  • Jamie Westbrook
  • Tyler Austin
  • Eric Filia
  • Patrick Kivlehan
  • Jack Lpez
