If the Oxy patch is lucrative enough to get extensions for a few of our key guys then I don't care at all...hell, put it on the side of the cap too IF it's that much money.

We need every dollar to compete with the obnoxious billionaires like Cohen...obviously we'll never get to their payroll level but as long as we can stay in the ballpark we have enough edges in scouting/development to put us over the top.

Now if the patch doesn't provide that much revenue at all I take back what I said above.

I was hoping that is the case too, but realistically how much can these silly patches make? Then I checked on the NBA.

Quote:

To date, the Brooklyn Nets have the most expensive patch deal. In September 2021, CNBC reported the Nets make $30 million per year from online trading platform WeBull. That agreement eclipsed the Golden State Warriors' $20 million per season deal with Japan-based e-commerce company Rakuten. That deal was extended last year and expires after the 2022-23 season.

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/03/29/nbas-cavaliers-reach-jersey-patch-deal-with-steel-company-cleveland-cliffs.html#:~:text=NBA%20jersey%20patches%20have%20grown,for%20the%202021%2D22%20season.
Not enough to keep everyone, but should be enough to incentivize raising the payroll by 10-20 M.

edit: read the article incorrectly at first.

That patch is to make money for investors, not to fill the roster.

Would Yuli come back for $3 million but he has to agree to wear a breatheable form-fitting total face mask of the Oxy logo during the games?

Catcher (2): Martn Maldonado, Yainer Diaz
Daz and fellow prospect Korey Lee will come to camp battling for the backup catcher spot behind the veteran Maldonado, but this will be fluid throughout the season. Diaz is considered a better hitter and can play first base, but Lee has a cannon for an arm.
First baseman (1): Jos Abreu
Second baseman (1): Jose Altuve
Shortstop (1): Jeremy Peña
Third baseman (1): Alex Bregman
Outfielders (4): Kyle Tucker, Michael Brantley, Chas McCormick, Jake Meyers
DH (1): Yordan Alvarez
Bench/Utility (2): David Hensley, Mauricio Dubn
With Aledmys Daz having signed with the A's, Hensley has an opportunity to make his first Opening Day roster. Hensley can play all four infield spots and in left field. Dubn, acquired in a midseason trade with the Giants last year, can play third base, shortstop, second base, center and left. Other utility options are Bligh Madris, a left-handed hitter who came to the Astros in a trade in January (he can play first base and right field), and J.J. Matijevic.
Starting pitchers (5): Framber Valdez, Lance McCullers Jr., Cristian Javier, Jos Urquidy, Luis Garca
Relief pitchers (8): Ryan Pressly, Ryne Stanek, Phil Maton, Rafael Montero, Bryan Abreu, Hctor Neris, Blake Taylor, Hunter Brown
The Astros made it a priority to return their entire bullpen from last season, which meant a three-year deal for Montero. There's depth and experience, led by an All-Star closer in Pressly, Neris, Stanek, Montero and an up-and-coming possible future closer in Abreu. Taylor will battle for the lefty spot with non-roster southpaw Austin Davis and Parker Mushinski. Other bullpen options are Seth Martinez, Brandon Bielak, Forrest Whitley, J.P. France, Enoli Paredes, Ronel Blanco and non-roster right-handers Ty Buttrey and Bryan Garcia.

If somehow Altuve walked after 2024, the city of Houston would burn down. No way they will not extend him
Agree but I thought that about JJ Watts.. then he was gone.

They let watt go because the team was going nowhere fast and wasn't likely to be competitive again during his career.

And remind me how many championships the Texans won with JJ on the field?

Go ahead, I'll wait.

Maybe being faced with having to live in poverty with only $5M for the next year will make him more amenable to an extension? I hope it doesn't cause hard feelings towards the Astros front office.

I'm pleasantly surprised the Astros won this one.

Any Oxy people here? Ok, good.

I hate that the Astros are associated with that group. The procurement people in one particular plant always had a a hand out. Allegedly… might as well throw in a caveat not needed from firsthand experience. Started out as Texans and UFC ticket requests and escalated to prostitutes and race horses. No kidding, a damn thoroughbred… and I'm talking about the horse.
This brings up a good off-season question. Would you rather spend 3 hours with a hooker who frequents an Oxy plant crowd or be forced to sit through a Texans game?
how about go to the Texans game with the hooker?

I think Yuli's best option is to let the season begin...and wait for a major injury on a contending team

I mean, I get it, but I'm really not a fan of the Oxy patch. I wish it was a little smaller, it looks like it takes up too much of the sleeve.

I'm not a fan either.

And I get that it's advertising but at the base level, advertising is to sell a product. What is Oxy trying to sell to the people who watch the Astros? I mean, they're an O&G/chemical company- we're not buying their petrochemicals or gas from them. It would be more understandable for Exxon, Shell, Chevron, etc since they have a product they market straight to consumers via a distributor network (ie- gas stations).

In other words, what kind of ROI is there really for Oxy sponsoring the Astros or paying to advertise with them on the uniforms, etc?

It's so executives can live the high life.

They will lay off 5,000 employees before giving up their Minute Maid Park suite and perks they get for purchasing that
you think the Oxy execs don't already live well and have great tickets to Astros games?

somewhat forgotten...Tucker only posted an .808 OPS last year

slugging % dropped almost 80 points from 2021

went from 70 x-base hits (in 2021) to 59 (in 2022)

one tough thing for Yuli under the life-is-not-fair axiom...

Yuli had a .647 OPS last year and cannot find a job in 2023

Miguel Cabrera had a .622 OPS last year and will make a cool $32 MM in 2023

I hope we sign him as a front-office / international ambassador. Cuban players see him as a legend.

I know what I'm listening to at work today. Wagner was my favorite player to watch as a kid. I wanted close games when I went to the park so I could see a dramatic 9th.

still think Yuli can add to this team and would love to sign him for a small contract. And I think $3mil is small.

He can still hit and is a good first baseman, and yes I think he could play a few games at third to give Bregs a breather. Plus his presence in the clubhouse is hard to measure but I think its overly positive.

If only Yuli were a two-time MVP and first ballot hall of famer. Maybe then he would be playing out the back half of a long-term deal and making bank.

Cabrera has been a below average to mediocre player since 2017. He will finish his career with 7 poor seasons.

he has made a minimum of $20 MM each year since 2010. So he was appropriately compensated during his great years.

can't say that the back half of the extension makes up for any underpaid years

I am not sure 20 M was appropriate for those years. I would think 30-40 M. Regardless, the major issue with Miggy's deal is that it started when he was 33. That is 99% of the time going to be terrible. If he signed it at 26, it would be a different story. Age 26-34 Miggy = 48.6 WAR, 138 games per season, and a 157 wRC+. I think that would be true for most of the guys too.

Yeah, Miggy is on a bad contract. I was just being snarky about the original framing.
