Like it or not, Maldy is going to be the 'Stros primary catcher at least to start the season and baring a serious injury he is going to be on the roster even if Dana Brown decides to trade for one that swings a better bat.

There are damn lies
Then there are statistics (unless those stats bolster my argument)

Two things...how is he still alive?

Also, I needed him to pan more to the right to see how much room on the building is left, because chances are we're going to need it. To be fair, his arm was probably getting tired as that was the extent of his exercise for the day.

Several have posted info before, but here are a few of my recommendations.

  • Show up early for practice area access. Gates open at 9 or 10... can't remember... but it is before the stadium opens.
  • Players will respond to kids, women, and maybe men (in that order).
  • Mrs. Marvin always knows something about their interests or kids. Players respond more to compliments about their charity work, engagement, or newborn baby over "hey, give me an autograph."
  • Don't expect too much interaction inside the stadium. Much more relaxed and interactive during the back sessions.
  • Don't be THAT GUY and steal batting practice homers from the kids. I've seen grown men wipe out a gaggle of kids for a ball.
  • Stadiums are much smaller, so you'll hear some awesome heckling that would make Olsen proud.
  • Tickets are not expensive, but I still like sitting on the outfield berm at West Palm. Take a blanket and enjoy the day.
  • There are a few restaurants that players and coaches favor, but it's hit or miss. I'll try to remember them and post here.

Mrs. Marvin and I will be there the first weekend in March. Let me know if you- or anyone else- will be around!
I love Texas Aggie sports, but I love Texas A&M more.

It seems the Braves frequently dipped into the catching position in the draft. I wouldn't be shocked if his first trade is a relatively minor one with his old club and catcher seems like a reasonable target. Drake Baldwin, whom they drafted in the 3rd last year seems like a reasonable target. He isn't a candidate to reach the majors before 2024 but offers a lefty catcher bat, which is something we could use. The Braves just invested heavily in Murphy and still have d'Arnaud.

That tweet doesn't mention the team it's talking about but from the manager it mentions I assume it's talking about the Red Sox that Joe Kelly played for in 2017.

Only way Maldy doesn't get majority of reps is if we trade for Perez.

And I honestly think he and Lee might be included in the trade and then Diaz backs up Perez. We aren't going to have Perez and Maldy splitting time

Why would KC want a 36 year old catcher as part of a trade? If the Royals are going to trade Perez wouldn't they look for players that will be coming into their prime in two or three years, not ones who will be retiring as a player?

Exactly W. Maldy is also relatively cheap and Lee is the player to develop for the next few years.

remember Vazquez and Maldy last year?

That was for a playoff run. Not at all the same thing as a full season run where you're paying much more for Perez

Maldy is probably one of the most overpriced players in the league.

Maldy make 5mil this year

Perez is owed:
$20-2023
$20-2024
$22-2025
Option of 13.5-2026

Even with a salary dump, I would expect KC would want more than Lee or Diaz and Maldy in return even if just to sell the trade to Royals fans. I would expect them to at least inquire about Urquidy and Garcia both whom have shown to be effective at the big league level and still have a few seasons under team control. I assume the front office would not even consider Hunter Brown. Do you think KC would consider Forrest Whitley? Would the 'Stros consider Jayden Murray before we really get to see what he might be capable? I'm putting forth pitching since I don't really know KC's needs and everyone can always use pitching. Are there other players in our system that the Royals might be interested?

That's insane! We would never include a front line ML starter for an aging defensively degrading catcher.

I could see us including a younger player in addition to what I mentioned but we aren't trading 3 ML players for Perez

And I don't think the Royals are simply going to swap either Lee or Diaz with Maldy straight up for Perez even in a salary dump situation.

im thinking Diaz or Lee and a lower level prospect.

Doubt that gets it done. Diaz or Lee and Leon might get it done. They could use a toolsy CF.

Possibly so, but that dang sure isn't a current ML starter. I'd be more inclined to include Jake. I think Leon is the long term answer to play some OF and eventually replace Jose

This is basically just some BS left field conjecture by me, but I'm curious, what do teams look for when drafting a catcher these days? Since almost nobody steals bases, it seems like having a powerful arm is sort of beside the point of being a catcher. Other then the fact that you're having to crouch in a painful position wearing a lot of crap all game long, is the most important thing about being really intelligent as a player and able to work well with the pitching staff?

My brother and I like to play the "what if" game in terms of how teams will evolve the game to try and take advantage of situations. We often wonder if the game gets to the point where no catcher is really known for their arm if some team would try really cultivating a lot of base stealers again, and running willfully during games to try and press the advantage. Sort of like when the Denver Nuggets used Loyola Marymount's offense for a while in the 90s or when the move to all the three pointers started.

Just some idle thoughts on a Saturday morning.

If KC is willing to go that cheap, don't you think the Damn Yankees might offer a little more? They are certainly have more holes in their lineup than the 'Stros.
Farmer1906
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Why would they be interested?
jkag89
How long do you want to ignore this user?
IMO they should be looking for help in their pen but their offense was awfully inconsistent last season with Judge putting them on his shoulders for much of the dog days. As bad as it was for the Yanks, it could have been much worse without Judge so tweaking the lineup is not out of the question, just like many here would like the 'Stros to upgrade offensively at both center and catcher. Trevino had a solid year for them but does not have a long track record so IMO it is not to much of a stretch that they might be interested especially if KC is willing to let Perez go for young MLB talent that does not project to have huge upside and a throw in lower prospect or two. . Heck even if it only marginally improves their club if the price is cheap enough they might do it just to keep the 'Stros from getting that much better.
Farmer1906

I think you might be underestimating how much they value Trivino. With Stanton, they can't use someone like Perez at DH.
W
How long do you want to ignore this user?

that's a good point -- if no one is going to steal bases...

an average defensive catcher will do.

it will be interesting to see if the new pitch-clock rules lead to more steal attempts
